To make Jakarta Capital City free from H5N1 or bird flu threat, East Jakarta Municipality has killed birds in residential area. This year until March as many as 391 poultry like chicken, pigeon, duck and Muscovy duck have been killed by East Jakarta Sub-dept. of Husbandry and Fishery.

Those poultry were 136 chickens, 164 pigeons, 30 ducks and 61 muscovy ducks. The municipality followed up residents? report and routine curbing action to the poultry. The officials killed them by cutting their neck and gave them back to the owners. In accordance with Bylaw No.4/2007 about poultry tackling, feeding and distribution in the city, the officials also destroyed their cages by burning them.

?Every Jakarta people is not allowed to feed poultry especially in the residential area. Residential area should be away from poultry in the range of 25 meters. If people are still feeding poultry, we will catch and kill,? said Adnan Ahmad, head of the sub-dept., Tuesday (3/23).

Furthermore, Ahmad Adnan stated that the sub-dept. is serious to anticipate the virus spread by implementing the bylaw. Therefore, the city should not be worried about bird flu anymore.

Residents can report to local urban village or sub-district if they found poultry around their neighborhood.

Head of Section for Animal Tackling and Monitoring, of the sub-dept., Sabdo Kurnianto stated that his side has socialized the bylaw in 10 sub-districts across East Jakarta.

?Residents could feed poultry only if the poultry have certificate from related institution,? he stated.
