EMU officials notify campus about TB case
Kim Kozlowski / The Detroit News
Eastern Michigan University has been notifying those who may have come in contact with a student who contracted tuberculosis, officials said Monday.
The student, who was employed at a campus eatery, was treated and released from a local hospital, according to EMU spokesman Geoff Larcom.
She is an international student and is believed to have contracted the sometimes fatal disease in another country. The woman is no longer taking classes this semester.
Tuberculosis is a contagious, airborne disease that strikes the lungs but can spread to other parts of the body,
The university and Washtenaw County Public Health Department met last week with people who may have worked with the student or come in contact with her, and encouraged them to get tested for the disease.
It was unclear how many people have been tested as a result.
"It's important that when the university gets something like this, it works with the county health department," Larcom said.
