Update of confirmed cases of novel influenza virus A(H1N1) in Europe

The Spanish Ministry of Health has today confirmed a second human case of infections with the novel influenza virus A(H1N1). The patient is a young adult male resident of Valencia (province) who developed symptoms on 21 April, one day before returning from a trip to Mexico. He was admitted to hospital on 24 April and is currently in isolation and receives treatment with oseltamivir. Symptoms consisted of fever (39.5 ?C), cough, asthenia and headache, with a mild clinical presentation and recovery.
He had been vaccinated against seasonal influenza in the six months prior to disease onset and did not refer known contacts with other confirmed human cases of the novel influenza A(H1N1) virus infection or contact with infected animals.
However, this case, who was symptomatic during his flight back to Spain, was travelling as part of the same group as the first Spanish case confirmed yesterday.
Oseltamivir prophylaxis has been offered to all passengers on the same flight.
With this latest patient and the two cases confirmed yesterday in the United Kingdom (Scotland), the number of novel influenza A(H1N1) cases confirmed in the European Union has risen to four.
