EDMONTON - An Edmonton-area woman who had H1N1 flu has died, the Alberta government said Monday.

The woman, who had chronic pre-existing medical conditions, died June 30. The province said it is still not clear what role the H1N1 virus played in her death.

EDMONTON ? A second Alberta woman, who was from the Edmonton area, has died after contracting the H1N1 flu virus.

She had chronic pre-existing medical conditions that complicated her condition, as did the first woman from the Gift Lake Metis Settlement who died earlier this year, Alberta?s health department said in a news release. It?s still not clear if the H1N1 virus caused either woman?s death.

The second woman died June 30.

?I want to express my sympathy to the family at this difficult time,? said Dr. Andre Corriveau, Alberta?s chief medical officer of health, in a statement. ?Alberta, like all jurisdictions across the country, remains vigilant in tracking the progress of the H1N1 virus. The sad and stark reality is that we expect that we will see other deaths associated with H1N1.?

Because of privacy concerns, Alberta Health and Wellness has not released the age of the woman, where she lived or what health issues she had.

As of July 3, there were 1,071 confirmed cases of the flu virus in Alberta, 45 of which have led to hospitalization.
