The prices of chicken and eggs has recently dropped to lthe lowest levels witness by me in many years. a flat of thirty jumbo eggs which sold for up to 28 Le just last year is currently being sold for 14 Le with very large stacks in almost all retail shops.

young chickens of weights just under one kilo are being sold at retail by some meat/poultry shops for as little as 10le per bird when purchased in groups of four birds at a time. this size bird has long been priced at 18 to 24 le each.

many people have stopped buying eggs and poultry do to fear of infection.

Re: Egypt - has lost 30% of its flock of hens in the past month to H5N1.

When we look at commercial poultry, you have chickens for egg production and chickens for meat production. These are not the same breed.

Looking at the previous article, it seems the 30% loss refers to the "broiler breeders". These chickens produce eggs, which are sold to farmers who will produce chickens to be slaughtered: the broilers.

So the 30% loss seems to refer to a part of the total commercial poultry population, not the whole population and not the backyard chickens?

you are correct about the article

active h5n1 outbreaks are wide spread currently with well over 100 cases reported in the last week and i suspect many are going undiscovered at the same time it may be a much larger issue then they have made public as any commercial producers normally inoculate their breeding flocks on a regular basis.
