Dengue cases in El Salvador rise to 3,633

SAN SALVADOR, April 13 (Xinhua) -- The Salvadorian Public Health and Social Assistance Ministry said that confirmed dengue cases in the country rose to 3,633 last week.

The number of classic dengue cases stood at 3,566 and the cases of hemorrhagic dengue 67, the ministry added.

The Ministry said that since the beginning of 2010, the number of dengue cases has been increasing by 250 cases a week. Since the ninth week of this year, the weekly increase has grown to 423 cases.

To better combat the disease, the ministry has launched a massive preventive campaign and asked for a budget reinforcement.

"We have an epidemic that never existed before during normal seasons," said Violeta Menjivar, deputy health minister in El Salvador.

Global warming has allowed mosquitoes, the transmitter of the dengue fever, to spread the disease more widely. Drought conditions in some areas also have worsened the outbreak because people have stored water in and near their living areas, creating breeding grounds for mosquitoes that harbor the virus.

Dengue fever symptoms include high temperatures and muscle aches. In extreme cases, hemorrhaging and death can follow.

Dengue Fever Prevention Campaign in El Salvador

SAN SALVADOR - The Public Health Ministry of El Salvador launched the second official campaign against the epidemic of dengue fever Friday, an epidemic that this year has affected more than four thousand 500 people.

Authorities of the sector called the public institutions to eradicate hatcheries of mosquitoes to combat the illness, now spreading to become worse in the rain season.

Teachers and students will also collaborate in the operations for prevention that will be carried out at community level on Saturday and Sunday.

The Salvadoran government decreed a yellow alert for the epidemics in February, due to a sudden increase of the reported cases.

Although the figures of infected people continue dropping and the epidemic has been stabilized, the sanitary authorities will keep the alert effective for indefinite time.

During this year, 4,441 cases of classic dengue and 73 hemorrhagic dengue fever have been identified.
