Ellis County has first H1N1 death

The Texas Department of State Health Services has reported that Ellis County has had its first H1N1-associated death ? a woman between the ages of 25 and 49.
The death was reported last month, said Carrie Williams, assistant press officer for the Texas DSHS. Due to privacy concerns, the DSHS could not release any details of the case. State data released with the DSHS report indicate there have been 13 H1N1-associated hospitalizations in Ellis County and three ICU admissions as of Nov. 7.
The DSHS is also reporting that private physicians and healthcare providers in Ellis County have received 12,480 doses of the H1N1 vaccine as of Monday. The local DSHS office in Kaufman, which serves the I-45 corridor of Ellis County, has a limited amount of vaccines available as well.
The county itself has received 240 of 450 requested doses of the vaccine, which will all be administered to law enforcement departments throughout the county, said John Patterson, Ellis County Emergency Management coordinator. The fire departments in the county should receive their vaccines through East Texas Medical Center, he said.
As of Nov. 13, about 3.3 million doses of the vaccine have been allocated to Texas by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Texas DSHS expects to receive 13 million doses of the vaccine by January.
