KUNMING, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 100 people have been hospitalized for encephalitis B in southwest China's Yunnan Province, a local hospital source confirmed on Saturday.
More than 30 of the patients were being treated at Shidian County Hospital in Baoshan, a city in the western p<!--ADV_CONTENT-->art of the province, close to the China-Myanmar border, a hospital source told Xinhua in a telephone interview.
He said the hospital received more than 40 encephalitis B patients last week and several people with mild cases of the disease have been allowed to go home. More patients were hospitalized at a village clinic in Jiufang village, he said without elaborating. The provincial health authority said it had sent an expert panel consisting top pediatricians to the county, an indication that many of the patients are children. :tiphat:

Nearly 100 people, apparently including many children, have been taken to hospital with encephalitis B in southwest China's Yunnan Province, Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday.

More than 30 are being treated at Shidian County Hospital in Baoshan, a city in the west of the province close to the Myanmar border, it quoted a hospital source as saying.

The hospital received more than 40 encephalitis B patients last week, Xinhua said, and more patients were in hospital at a clinic in a village of the province.

The provincial health authority has sent an expert panel consisting of top paediatricians to the county, indicating that many of the patients are children, Xinhua said.

Last summer, an outbreak of mosquito-borne encephalitis B -- which inflames the brain -- killed at least 14 people in the central province of Henan and 26 in the northern provinces of Shanxi and neighbouring Shaanxi, according to state media.

<!-- info end--><!-- content start-->Most of the people hospitalized following an outbreak of encephalitis B in southwest China's Yunnan Province are children, the local health authority has confirmed.
The authority has sent an expert panel consisting of top pediatricians to Jiufang Township, 44 km from Shidian County, to investigate the outbreak.
"The hospital had received 53 suspected encephalitis B patients by Saturday night, and only three of them were adults," said Xu Shaojun, head of Shidian County People's Hospital.
Nearly 100 people in Shidian County of Baoshan, a city in the western part of the province, close to the China-Myanmar border, are being treated in local hospitals for the disease.
According to the county government, the first patient, a nine-year-old girl, was identified on April 16, and most of the patients come from five villages of Jiufang.
The township clinic could not meet the growing number of patients and started to transfer some of them to the People's Hospital in Shidian.
The number of patients confirmed to be suffering from encephalitis B is not yet available as most of their symptoms are still developing, the hospital said.
