Veterinary officials quarantined a farm in the village of Dolne Semerovce, some 160 km (100 miles) south-east of the capital Bratislava, and ordered the slaughter of more than 7,000 pigs, infected with the highly-aggressive virus.


"There will be a meeting in Brussels with the European Commission's officials on Monday," Milan Matus, Head of the SVPS Director's Office told Reuters. "We will submit a report on this case and hope the EC will ease its restrictions to only two districts," he added.



Slovakia, which last registered swine fever in 2005, urged farmers to stop any contact between domestic and wild animals.

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP) - A Slovak veterinary official says a second outbreak of swine fever has been detected in eastern Slovakia.
The head of the regional veterinary authority, Radoslav Sterbak, says up to 12,000 pigs from a farm near the village of Jesenske were ordered Wednesday to be slaughtered to prevent the disease from spreading.
The
farm is located 220 kilometers (140 miles) east of Bratislava.
It is the second outbreak of the disease in a week. It was detected last week on a farm in Dolne Semerovce, 150 kilometers (almost 100 miles) east of the Slovak capital. About 7,000 pigs have been ordered slaughtered there.
Both farms belong to the Danish-owned company Pigagro SRO.

The European Commission has adopted urgent protection measures to stop the spread of classical swine fever (CSF), after an outbreak was reported in the Slovak Republic last weekend.


The highly contagious and usually fatal disease was detected on a farm in the Slovakian district of Levice.

Emergency measures have been introduced - no pigs can be transported between pig farms in the country, or to other EU Member States or countries outside the Union. The same measures will also apply to other pig products such as semen and embryos.

However, the movement ban may not apply to pigs due to be slaughtered within Slovakia.

TRACES
The Commission has also provided information on its 'TRACES' system, an internet network bringing together veterinary authorities and businesses in all Member States to help track the movements of traded and imported animals and products, so authorities can react quickly in the event of an emergency.

The Commission can track pigs transported from the Slovak Republic to other Member States and third countries before the detection of the disease, in order that controls can be carried out on these animals.

The situation will be reviewed at an extraordinary meeting of the EU's Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health Monday next.

Contagious swine fever detected in Slovakia

Bratislava - Thousands more pigs will have to be slaughtered in southern Slovakia following a new outbreak of highly contagious swine fever, an official said on Thursday.

A total of 13 332 pigs will have to be killed at a farm in Jesenske owned by a Danish investor, state veterinary official Milan Matus said. The cull should start at the end of the week, he added.

This farm, situated in a village some 290 kilometres south-east of the capital Bratislava is the second to be infected with swine fever in Slovakia.

The State Veterinary and Food Office (SVPS) earlier this week ordered the killing of 7 000 pigs at a farm managed by the same Danish investor, in the southern town of Dolne Semerovce. The slaughtering was to be completed on Thursday, according to Matus.

The European Commission slapped a ban on all exports of pigs and pig products out of Slovakia as well as their internal movement on Tuesday to stop the highly contagious disease from spreading.

Brussels is to reconsider the ban in a meeting next Monday.

Swine fever, which kills pigs but is harmless to humans, last erupted in southern Slovakia in 2005. However, the number of pigs to be culled is far higher than the previous record of 5 914 killed in 2004 according to the Slovak media.

BRUSSELS, April 21 (Xinhua) -- The European Commission on Monday loosened control measures over swine fever in Slovakia at the recommendation of veterinary experts.

Pigs now may be moved from farm-to-farm and from farm-to-slaughter within Slovakia under certain conditions.

The ban on the movement of pigs, pig semen, ova and embryos from Slovakia to other European Union (EU) member states and third countries is maintained.

Interim control measures were put in place last week following the confirmation of outbreaks of classical swine fever in Slovakia.

The disease situation in Slovakia was discussed at Monday's meeting of veterinary experts from EU member states at the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health.

Two outbreaks of classical swine fever have been reported in two commercial pig farms in Slovakia. The Slovak authorities have taken rigorous measures to control the disease. All pigs in the two farms -- around 20,000 in total -- are being killed and destroyed.

Slovakian authorities discovered that contacts have occurred between the two infected farms and other pig farms in Slovakia, which are now under strict control.

However, more time will be required to complete these investigations, said the commission, the executive body of the EU. An expert epidemiologist from the EU will be dispatched to Slovakia to help investigate.
