Four military strikes in recent days have "threatened safety and security" at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, a UN agency has warned.

Attacks on 19, 20 and 27 September damaged transformers at a nearby thermal plant that are "of vital importance" for supplying power to the nuclear plant, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said.

A further attack on 22 September also reportedly disabled an off-site radiation monitoring station, "reducing the capability to monitor radiation levels" around the plant.

IAEA director general Rafael Mariano Grossi is in discussions to agree a localised ceasefire around the facilities to allow repairs to be made.

IAEA says its chief negotiating new local ceasefire amid drones strikes near Zaporizhzhia plant

“DG Grossi says attacks endangering nuclear safety and security remain completely unacceptable and must cease immediately,” it went on to say.

“In order to prevent the risk of a nuclear accident during the conflict, all sides must exercise maximum military restraint near such facilities and their power infrastructure installations, DG Grossi says,” it added.

The situation around the ZNPP, Europe's largest nuclear power plant and one of the world's 10 largest, remains tense amid persistent concerns over a potential nuclear disaster, as Moscow and Kyiv frequently accuse each other of carrying out attacks around the facility.

Ukrainian shelling over recent weeks has damaged ‌external power supply equipment at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power ‌plant in southeastern Ukraine, with electricity currently being provided by emergency sources, the ‌plant management said on Saturday. The situation ‌was under control and was being monitored by the plant's staff, management said in a statement.

The plant, Europe's largest with six reactors, produces no electricity but needs power supplied by two external links to keep nuclear fuel cool.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said on October 2 that Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is considering further reducing the number of emergency diesel generators kept in automatic standby because diesel reserves remain low. According to Sina Finance, the agency said the plant relied on emergency diesel generators for nearly three weeks in August and September after losing external power for an extended period, which significantly reduced diesel stocks.

The agency said recent efforts to replenish diesel have still been hindered by military activity in the surrounding area. It also said the plant has lost external power 10 times since June and is now dependent on a single 330-kilovolt external transmission line.

International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi said the continued lack of diesel deliveries is worsening the already fragile nuclear safety situation at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and called on the relevant parties to ensure fuel reaches the plant as soon as possible.
