What is this summary about?Infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), can still cause significant illness and, particularly, death for people with certain medical conditions. COVID-19 vaccines play a crucial role in protecting these people and could remain relevant for the continued management of COVID-19. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, many people had questions or concerns about the COVID-19 vaccines, which led to some people choosing not to get vaccinated. As the virus that causes COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) continues to evolve, updated vaccines that are better matched to the new versions of the virus (variants) can provide better protection. The original publication, which we summarize here, highlights common misconceptions about COVID-19 mRNA vaccines and provides scientific evidence to support healthcare professionals in addressing their patients’ concerns. This summary includes updates that have occurred since the original publication.What are the key takeaways?The updated variant-adapted mRNA vaccines provide protection against COVID-19 even for people previously infected with SARS-CoV-2. Evidence suggests vaccination for children and pregnant/ lactating women is beneficial. COVID-19 mRNA vaccines have undergone extensive testing for safety and efficacy, and serious side effects occur but are very rare. Safety monitoring for COVID-19 mRNA variant-adapted vaccines is ongoing and one of history’s most intensive surveillance efforts.
