Factory Workers In Bangi Merely Having Seasonal Flu, Not H1N1: Ismail Merican

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 20 (Bernama) -- A group factory workers in Bandar Baru Bangi near here, who were reported to have shown influenza-like symptoms, are merely having seasonal flu due to viral infections and not influenza A (H1N1), Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said.
He said the Health Ministry's probe into the matter found that 45 out of the 394 workers at the factory had developed fever, flu and cough since Friday.
"They were referred to private hospitals and clinics for treatment. Tests conducted by the hospital found that 11 of them were positive for influenza A.
"However, the influenza A (H1N1) tests conducted on them by the reference laboratory came back negative. So, the cluster was not due to influenza A (H1N1) infection, but merely a seasonal flu," he said in a statement here Wednesday.
Dr Mohd Ismail, however, said that the Selangor Health Department was still investigating the cases to ensure there were no other infections, including dengue.
He said the influenza-like-illness monitoring process mounted by the ministry found no new influenza A (H1N1) cluster cases so far.
"Hence, the public need not worry about the situation but they are advised to continue to take preventive measures against H1N1," he added.
