CHANDIGARH: Two more people, including a doctor at of a leading hospital here, have tested positive for the influenza A (H1N1) virus, taking the
total number of swine flu cases in the city to 59, officials said Monday.

The latest to contract the virus were a senior resident doctor of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and a 27-year-old resident of Mohali, some 10 km from here.

"We had collected the throat and nasal swab samples of these patients yesterday (Sunday) and their reports have come positive. Their condition is stable and there is no need to worry," a health official said.

"Besides, we have got five new suspected cases, including a 71-year-old man from Ambala, Haryana. Their reports are still awaited," he added.

A 14-year-old girl had died due to swine flu in PGIMER Saturday. A native of Haryana's Karnal town, around 130 km from here, she had been admitted to the hospital Friday with breathing problem.

Following her death, the Chandigarh health department had quarantined 14 of her relatives at their house in Sector 23 here.

"We had examined their condition on Sunday evening; all of them are fine and exhibiting no symptoms of swine flu. But still we will keep them quarantined for a few more days as a precautionary measure," stated the official.

This was the third casualty reported so far in this region due to swine flu.

Earlier a 12-year-old from Uttar Pradesh's Meerut town had died of the virus at a private hospital in Chandigarh. She was staying in the hostel of a residential school on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway.

A 48-year-old woman from Himachal Pradesh had died of swine flu at a private hospital in Mohali near here.

Of the 59 people who have tested positive for H1N1 so far, 15 are doctors.

CHANDIGARH: A resident of Panchkula?s Sector 7, Pallavi Kwatra, aged 17, became the fourth person to die of swine flu in Tricity on Monday. She was
brought to PGI at 10.30am and breathed her last at about noon, said UT health officials.

Doctors stated that as her lungs were bleeding, she could not be put on the ventilator. Her throat swab sample taken on arrival was found positive for H1N1 influenza in the evening.

Panchkula's nodal officer for swine flu, Jagmal Singh, said 11 people, who came in contact with the deceased regularly, had been quarantined at home and six throat swab samples taken from among them.

Pallavi studied in class X at Moti Ram Arya Public School located in her sector of residence. Sources said she had been suffering from fever on November 5 and 6 and was taken to a private practitioner. Her condition improved for some time, but again started deteriorating during a school trip to Anandpur Sahib and Naina Devi on Sunday. Around 150 students had gone on the trip. She was then taken to Alchemist Hospital in Panchkula?s Sector 21, and was referred to PGI from there.

Two schools closed

DAV Public School, Sector 8, was closed till November 16 on Monday after two more students were found positive for swine flu. Its primary wing in Sector 39-D was also closed as the same buses are used for both the campuses. Classes at GMSSS-33 were also suspended for a week as a student of class X there tested positive for H1N1

Six suspected

Six suspected cases of H1N1 influenza were reported in Tricity on Monday. One of the patients is a 35-year-old man from Karnal, who was brought in a serious condition to PGI. He is suffering from acute respiratory distress syndrome, said sources

Earlier deaths

Harshita, 12, a native of Meerut, who studied at an Ambala school, was the first to die of H1N1 in Chandigarh. The second victim was a woman from Solan, who passed away at a hospital in Mohali. Later, a 14-year-old girl from Karnal had died at PGI

Chandigarh, Nov 16 (IANS) With swine flu cases crossing the 100 mark in this Union Territory, the health authorities have ordered the Punjab Engineering College (PEC) and six other schools to close down for a week after H1N1 infections were reported.
Meanwhile, Panjab University authorities have said that students who show symptoms of swine flu will be given compensatory attendance for the period they are unable to attend lectures.

This was decided at a meeting of the university here Monday.

Chandigarh has witnessed a spurt in swine-flu cases this month. Till Oct 31, there were only 57 positive cases reported here, including those from Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. But in the last 15 days the number has crossed the 100-cases mark.

Panjab University Vice Chancellor R.C. Sobti, who chaired the meeting of university deans and heads of teaching departments, said that gloves and masks would be provided to all departments and workers of university canteens and messes.

Committees have been formed in departments, hostels and the market to ensure cleanliness. Hand sanitizers will be put up in all departments and other public areas.

After two students of St John?s School, Sector-26, tested positive for swine flu, the school has shut down for a week. The students are brothers and live in Sector 9, Chandigarh. They study in Class I and III. Both have been quarantined with their family members.

This is the fifth educational institute in the city to shut down following swine flu cases. Earlier, St Anne?s Covent, DAV Public School, PEC University, and the Chandigarh College of Architecture (CCA) had suspended all classes.

The ongoing Golden Jubilee celebrations at St John?s have been postponed. Only on Monday the school had released a brochure after which the celebrations were kicked off.

Another positive case has been reported from Ryan International School, Sector 49. A Class VII student has tested positive. He has been admitted in the PGI. According to health officials, the boy is stable and responding to treatment.

Winter onset sees rise in swine flu cases in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, Nov 18 (PTI) With the onset of winter, the city has witnessed rise in swine flu cases with 107 testing positive, a sharp increase from 57 less than three weeks earlier.

Nearly a dozen school students have been affected by the H1N1 virus in this week alone where the total number of suspected cases have been estimated at 403.

For the third consecutive day, attendance in schools, especially in junior classes, has come down sharply as parents opted to keep their children at home to avoid any risk of infection.

At least six private schools have also been shut down for seven days after some students were found infected by the virus, Chandigarh's Nodal Officer H C Gera said.

The Punjab Engineering College has already been closed for a week after six of its students were found positive for swine flu a few days back.

Taking another closer look at city?s preparedness in tackling swine flue, UT home-cum-health secretary on Saturday convened another meeting with representatives of the health and education department to review implementation of guidelines and measures being taken by them. The need for active involvement of all government as well as private schools in implementing the guidelines was discussed during the meeting.

Regarding the issue of mass gatherings where probability of spread of the disease is higher, it was decided that advisories will be issued and displayed at entry points of all events taking place in the city. Besides this, a team of doctors will also be present at functions with large gatherings. However, earlier guidelines issued by the health and education department will continue to be followed as far as events at government and private schools are concerned.

During the meeting, nodal officer for swine flu informed all members about recommendations spelled out by the advisory group, which had also met on Friday. The health secretary was apprised about various decisions of the advisory group regarding strategy for closure of schools /suspension of affected classes, prophylaxis treatment to close contacts, unauthorized testing by private laboratory and home quarantine system.

Significantly, district education officer was requested to compile data of all schools pertaining to percentage of absentees due to the flu in past one week. Also, information on total number of students being sent back by school on account of cold and cough was sought by the officer. The data will be provided to the nodal officer-swine flu for analysis and also presented to the advisory group for establishing linkages.

Assuring the authorities about all possible measures being undertaken, the heath officials stated that the department was fully equipped with sufficient drugs and other medical facilities. It was also stated that all positive cases have been treated well and their family members have been quarantined.

A junior resident doctor at PGI and a 12-year-old student of Moti Ram Arya School, Panchkula, who lives in Indira Colony in Chandigarh, have tested positive. The third victim is a 33-year-old from Mohali.

Health officials said even after the student?s sample was sent for testing, he was being sent to school. When the family was informed about the infection, the boy was reportedly in school. ?It is very disturbing that the child was sent to school in this condition,? a Panchkula health official said.

Earlier, a 17-year-old girl of the same school had died of swine flu.

?We have quarantined the boy and the family, and treatment has begun,? a health official said.

UT Health Secretary Ram Niwas, meanwhile, met health officials to discuss the swine flu scenario. In the meeting, health officials were reportedly not in favour of closing the city schools. They reiterated a school should be shut only when three or more cases are reported from different classes.

Chandigarh, Nov 24 (IANS) Two people have died of swine flu at a hospital here, health officials said Tuesday.

Both patients were not from Chandigarh and their test reports came in after their death, an official said.

The victims of the H1NI virus have been identified as Jagdev Singh, 51, of Hoshiarpur in Punjab, 150 km from here, and Amandeep, 42, of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, 200 km from here.

Both were admitted to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here in a serious condition. While one died Sunday, the other died Tuesday, health officials said.

With this, the number of deaths due to swine flu here has gone to six. All victims were from outside Chandigarh, especially neighbouring Punjab and Haryana.

So far, nearly 500 suspected swine flu cases have been reported here since June. Of them, over 120 have tested positive, including 60 students.

Semester Exams postponed until January, 16 new cases at Punjab Engineering College confirmed

Keeping in mind the increase in number of students being tested H1N1 positive, Punjab Engineering College (PEC) has decided to postpone its semester exams beginning next Monday, while the winter vacation is being preponed. In all, 16 students from the college have tested positive for swine flu.

A meeting of health officials and senior faculty members from PEC was chaired by Home-cum-Health Secretary Ram Niwas to discuss the precautions to be taken to control the spread of the virus. While PEC Dean (Academics) Professor Ashwani Prashar confirmed that the proposal of postponing semester exams was being discussed, he said nothing had been finalised.

Sources, however, said a decision in this regard has been taken and is likely to be announced by Saturday as officials fear that students might skip classes over the next two days and take an extended weekend break.

Even as the UT Health department remained tight-lipped on fresh cases for the second day, a patient succumbed to swine flu on Friday, taking the toll in the city to eight. The victim is an 8-year-old child from Solan, Himachal Pradesh. He died at GMCH-32 late on Thursday.

Doctors at the hospital said the child was suffering from flu-like symptoms for the last several days and was under treatment at a private clinic in Patiala.

After his condition deteriorated, he was referred to GMCH-32 on Wednesday.

While health officials refused to comment, HP health officials said the child was suffering from acute respiratory disease, which worsened due to swine flu.

Local health authorities have quarantined his family members.

Besides withholding daily updates from the media, the Chandigarh Administration seems to be keeping it away from the affected institutions also.


Schools which have been in news for swine flu cases are not receiving regular updates about fresh cases.


Authorities in Vivek High School, St John?s School, Carmel Convent School and St Stephen?s School say they are not being regularly informed of fresh cases in their schools. As a result, these schools cannot take any preventive measures.


Last month, several classes were suspended in these schools.


?We don?t know if more students have been infected with swine flu, as the Health department hasn?t sent any communication to us,? H S Mamik, director of the Vivek High School, said. ?We now rely on parents to come forward and tell us if their child is unwell.?


Two positive cases from the school were reported on Tuesday. The students, a girl and a boy, are residents of Sector 42 and 38, Chandigarh, respectively.


So far, the virus has affected seven students in Vivek High School. But the school ?knows only about four cases?.


School authorities also denied having any information about the student who tested positive on Monday.


In another case, a Class I student of St John?s was tested positive on Tuesday morning, but the school was informed only late in the evening.


?It was only after 8 pm that we received a call, and were instructed to suspend Class I B with immediate effect,? the school?s spokesperson said. ?We tried to inform all parents, but there were many who could not be contacted. A number of students may turn up tomorrow. A regular and timely update would have been handy.?


School authorities further said, ?It is not possible to inform all parents whenever there is a positive case. It?s better that parents get updates through newspapers.?


Health Secretary Ram Niwas, meanwhile, refuted the schools? claims. ?Schools themselves are not willing to share information, as they fear bad publicity. We have been extra cautious in every case. Health officials have been going to schools, quarantining students and asking authorities to discontinue classes,? he said.


Niwas reiterated his decision to not share daily updates with the media, for it would ?lead to panic?.


?For the same reason, schools have been instructed to not talk about positive cases,? he said.


St John?s sends 15 students back home, man dies at PGI


St. John?s School sent 15 students back home on Tuesday after they showed flu-like symptoms.

An Ambala resident died of swine flu at PGI two days ago. While the UT and PGI officials refused to comment, swine flu nodal officer of Ambala Dr Surinder Mohan said Rakesh Agarwal (42) died on the day his samples were tested positive on Monday. Two persons have died of swine flu in Ambala so far.


In Mohali schools, no classes have been reportedly suspended. Vice-principal of the Yadavindra Public School, Anita Kashyap, said no student was sent back home due to swine flu.

Annual function of the Lawerance Public Senior Secondary School, which was postponed earlier, has been scheduled for December 5.


In Panchkula also schools functioned normally. Sandeep Sardana, principal of the Manav Mangal School, Sector 11, said, ?Two doctors are keeping a close watch on students. But no instructions or guidelines have been received from the administration.?

Swine flu: Fitness certificate puts PGI in the dock

CHANDIGARH: UT health secretary on Wednesday requested PGI director to order an inquiry regarding a fitness certificate issued by a doctor in PGI to a student. Test conducted by the department of virology had declared him fit to attend school, whereas he later tested positive for swine flu.

Secretary health Ram Niwas, however, said primarily it was the responsibility of the parents to ensure that if a child had flu-like symptoms he is not sent to school.

Following two more swine flu deaths reported in Chandigarh on November 29 and December 1, the health secretary convened a review meeting with representatives of PGI, GMCH-32, GMSH-16, education department and some private hospitals. Death of 16-year-old Rani from Manimajra was reported on November 29, just an hour after the minor was admitted to PGI in a critical condition. The second death reported was of Ganga, a housemaid working in Panjab University. She died in GMCH-32 on December 1.
Regarding closure of schools and suspension of classes, norms as recommended by members of the advisory group will remain applicable and schools will not be closed unnecessarily. It has also been decided that schools will be issued written circulars with regard to closure on the basis of reports received from PGI.

Chandigarh, Dec 3 (PTI) A teenaged girl and a woman succumbed to swine flu here, taking the total number of deaths due to the disease in the region to eight.

"A 16-year-old school girl and a 27-year-old maid servant have died due to the swine-flu in the city," an official spokesman said here today.

The family members of the girl and the immediate contacts of the maid have also been quarantined, he added.

With mercury falling in Chandigarh and its surrounding areas, there has been a sharp increase in the number of positive cases in the city during the past one month.

Chandigarh, Dec 5 (PTI) Two persons have died of swine flu here as seven more persons tested positive for the disease, a health official said today.

The first victim was a 25-year-old woman from Nawashahr in Punjab who had been admitted to PGIMER here and was put on ventilator support. She died yesterday, Union Territory's Nodal Officer for swine flu H C Gera said today.

A 53-year-old man, who tested positive for the virus and was admitted to the GMCH-32 hospital here also died yesterday, he said.

CHANDIGARH/MOHALI: With the spread of H1N1 influenza not showing any signs of abating, 12 persons were detected positive for the flu on Saturday.

Of these, five cases were reported from Mohali alone. Three persons have fallen prey to the flu during the last few days.
UT nodal officer for swine flu H C Gera said an eight-year-old, a student of Class III at Ryan International School, was found infected with H1N1. The student?s parents are doctors. After the flu status was confirmed, the school suspended all sections of Class III for one week, the officer said, adding that students who used to travel in the patient?s bus had also been asked to remain home for the same period. A 25-year-old from Yamunanagar in Haryana also tested positive for the flu at PGI.

Meanwhile, UT officer Gera said five positive cases were reported from various parts of Punjab. These included a woman and her 15-day-old child. The mother gave birth to twins after which she developed symptoms of swine flu and on collecting the samples she tested positive, after which the newborns were checked and one was found infected. In Mohali, five persons were found infected with swine flu, taking the total number of positive cases to be detected in the district to 25. If those whose swab samples were sent to Chandigarh hospitals for testing are also taken into
consideration, the number would climb up to 37.

Of the five cases detected on Saturday, one is a nursing student at Fortis Hospital. Mohali district health officer S P Surila said the hospital had been asked to identify the contact cases.

DHO Surila said as there were 70 students in the nursing college, the hospital had been asked to find out if anybody had caught the infection. ??We have advised them not to let students attend to patients for their training programme and we?ve been assured full cooperation,?? the officer said. Of the remaining four cases, one case each was reported from Sector 69, Sector 67, Saini Vihar Baltana and Kurali.

In Sector 69, a 25-year-old woman was found positive. She is a staff nurse at PGI Chandigarh. From Baltana, a woman was found infected with H1N1, from Sector 67, a resident of Guru Har Sahai Society tested positive and her nine contact cases had been identified already. A 24-year-old youth from Kurali was also found infected. Surila said all the positive cases had been asked to contact the emergency department of civil hospital for their treatment.

Chandigarh, Dec 7 (PTI) Three people, one of them a middle-aged woman, succumbed to the dreaded swine flu in the Union Territory of Chandigarh today.

A 45-year-old woman from Hoshiarpur, a man, also aged 45 and hailing from Jalandhar, and a villager from Zirkapur, near here, died of the illness, a health official said.

The villager died in a private hospital and the other two at PGIMER here, H C Gera, Nodal Officer for swine flu cases, said.

All the three were brought here yesterday in serious condition, he said adding five more H1N1 cases were reported in the city today.

So far, 170 people, including 50 school students, have been afflicted with illness in the Union Territory.

Jalandhar, Dec 7 (PTI) A 45-year-old, city-based swine flu patient today died in PGI, Chandigarh, where he was admitted recently for treatment.

The patient identified as Harbhajan Singh (45), resident of Aman Nagar locality of the district was recently tested positive for H1N1 virus and was admitted to PGI, Chandigarh, died today, Dr TP Singh, Epidemiologist of Civil Hospital here told reporters.

"Now, we will conduct a thorough survey to find out that before getting admitted to PGI, with whom the patient came into contact and if symptoms of the virus is found in them, Tamiflu tablets will be distributed besides keeping them in isolation ward," Dr Singh added.

A man each hailing from Hoshiarpur, Patiala and Chandigarh succumbed to the illness at PGIMER here, he said.With mercury dipping in Chandigarh and neighbouring areas, the city is witnessing an increase in the number of swine flu cases.

So far, 175 people, including over 50 school children, have contracted the disease in the city, the official said.
