Finland has passed the peak of the swine flu epidemic. However, the National Institute for Health and Welfare(THL) notes further cases can be anticipated throughout the winter. So far, the H1N1 virus has claimed the lives of 36 people in Finland.

THL notes that less than half of the population has been vaccinated against the virus. Currently some 1.2 million Finns have received a jab against the H1N1 virus.

A second wave of the swine flu virus is expected to break out by next April or by the autumn at the latest.

A total of 36 people have died as a direct consequence of an H1N1 infection. However, the exact cause of death has yet to be determined in a number of cases.

Here is another estimate of seasonal flu deaths (500-1,000) that is remarkably close, as a percent of population, to the U.S. estimate. The population ratio between the U.S. and Finland is approximately 60 to 1. The U.S. estimate of 36,000 seasonal flu deaths would equate to 600 deaths in Finland - which is in the estimated range.

In an earlier thread, Ukraine published an estimate of seasonal flu deaths of 6,000. The population ratio between the U.S. and Ukraine is approximately 6.65 to 1. If you divide the U.S. estimate by 6.65, you get approximately 5,400.

Either the various influenza strains consistently kill 0.010-0.012% of the population every year (regardless of the economic conditions, climate, nutrition, or health care available), or the various "estimates" use the same models.
