Another Pregnant Woman Has H1N1

For the second time in recent days another pregnant woman in Palm Beach County has been diagnosed with theH1N1 virus, also known as swine flu.

In this case the woman got so sick, so fast that her husband knew she had to go straight to the emergency room.

Now, this 27 year old West Palm Beach woman is in the ICU at Wellington Regional Medical Center, on life-support, and according to her husband she is in a drug-induced coma battling the effects of the H1N1 virus.

Aubrey is 26 weeks pregnant, with a baby girl.

"It doesn't look like we're gonna have to do an emergency C-section unless for some reason Aubrey starts to go downhill," he said.

Aubrey has been hospitalized for the past week at Wellington Regional with H1N1, where doctors are treating her with a prescription drug Tamiflu.

"She started feeling a bit of a sore throat. She started coughing a little bit, so she went to the doctor, they checked her out and nothing checked out as anything major," Bryan explained.

So she went home. That was about two weeks ago. But instead of getting better, she got worse.

"I was talking to her, she wasn't responsive, she was disoriented. She couldn't answer basic simple questions, so I told her get dressed, we're going to the hospital," Bryan said.

He took her to the emergency room last Sunday July 5 and she's been in the hospital ever since.

WELLINGTON — A 27-year-old pregnant woman lies critically ill in the hospital here suffering what her husband says is a confirmed case of swine flu.

Opdyke's case is a chilling story of a woman who got progressively sicker, starting with a sore throat. Opdyke, 34, said his wife, a waitress at Newport Cafe in West Palm Beach, went to a doctor June 30 who recommended Tylenol. After days wore on, she got worse and July 3 called and asked for an antibiotic, which she was then prescribed.

She became so incoherent he then took her to Wellington Regional Medical Center, where she has been since July 5.

Kevin DiLallo, the medical center's chief executive officer, said it had not been confirmed as a case of H1N1 virus and the county Department of Health needed to be involved. A spokesperson for the Department of Health, Tim O'Connor, said the department did get a report late Friday of another confirmed case but he was unsure whether it was Opdyke's case.

A second person present in the intensive care unit said she directly heard doctors reporting that Aubrey Opdyke had confirmed swine flu. Natasha Snyder, 20, whose husband has been hospitalized for weeks, said after that all of the medical staff has worn masks and gloves and doors previously left open within the intensive case unit were closed. It has her concerned, she said, for who else may have already been exposed.

27-Year-Old Expecting Mother In Medically Induced Coma

Bryan Opdyke said doctors had to put his wife in a medically induced coma the next day for her own safety.

"They basically said that her kidneys were starting to shut down because her brain was trying to demand so much oxygen and then the baby was trying to demand so much oxygen," he said.

Dingers said it's hard to see her normally active friend lying in a hospital bed. Since Girl Scouts, the two have been constantly active in service projects to help the community.

"She just loves helping people, helping women with children," Dingers said. "If you had told me when I was pregnant that if I had any questions, I could always go to her, and she'd always have advice for me, and she was a big help."

Opdyke is 26 weeks pregnant and expected to give birth in October. WPBF News 25's Jim Abath reported that the baby girl is doing OK.

Maternal fetal specialists are monitoring the baby 24 hours a day while infectious disease and intensive care unit physicians keep watch over Opdyke.

In the past week, doctors have backed off on the coma medications and Opdyke has shown some signs of improvement.

Dingers said she's certain there's more of that to come.

"She's very strong -- definitely strong, stubborn," Dingers said. "I know she'll make it. I do. I love her, and I just know she'll make it through."

During WPBF News 25's interview with Bryan Opdyke, he received a phone call from the hospital saying that his wife's lungs had collapsed. He left to be by her side.

Her condition was not immediately available.

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. -- A 27-year-old woman who lost her baby while she was in a medically induced coma after being diagnosed with swine flu while pregnant was discharged from the hospital Tuesday.

WPBF 25 News' Angela Rozier was at Kindred Hospital when Aubrey Opdyke was released.

"I'm really excited to go home," Opdyke said. "Yeah, it's been a long time."
