Year to Date Human Case Summary

Eastern Equine Encephalitis Acquired in Florida: Four human cases of EEE have been reported in 2010 in Hillsborough (2), Wakulla, and Leon counties with onset dates in June (1) and July (3).

West Nile Virus Infection Acquired in Florida: One human case of WNV has been reported in 2010 in Osceola County with onset in July.

Dengue Acquired in Florida: In 2010, one case of dengue has been reported as acquired in Broward County and twenty-eight cases of dengue have been reported as acquired in Key West. Of the Key West cases, 21 are Key West residents, six are residents of other Florida counties, and one resides out of state. Onset dates ranged from March 17 to August 4, 2010.

Imported Dengue: Sixty-seven cases of dengue with onset in 2010 have been reported in individuals with travel history to a dengue endemic country in the two weeks prior to onset. Countries of origin were: Brazil, Colombia (7), Costa Rica (3), Dominican Republic (11), Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala (2), Haiti (3), Honduras (3), Jamaica (2), Nicaragua (2), Philippines, Puerto Rico (20), Venezuela (8), Malaysia/Dubai/Bangladesh, and Panama/Venezuela (slash indicates travel to more than one country). Counties reporting cases were Alachua (2), Broward (10), Collier, Duval, Escambia, Hendry, Hillsborough (4), Lee, Marion, Miami-Dade (22), Monroe, Orange (6), Osceola (4), Palm Beach (6), Pasco, Pinellas, Seminole (2), St. Lucie, and Volusia.

Of the Key West cases, 24 are Key West residents, eight are residents of other Florida counties, and one resides out of state. Onset dates ranged from March 17 to August 8, 2010.

Imported Dengue: Seventy-four cases of dengue with onset in 2010 have been reported in individuals with travel history to a dengue endemic country in the two weeks prior to onset.

West Nile Virus Infection Acquired in Florida: Nine human cases of WNV have been reported in 2010 in Osceola, Orange (2), Collier (2), Broward, Duval, De Soto, and Suwannee counties with onset in July (2), August (4), and September (3). The Suwannee County case had travel outside the county, primarily in Florida. One positive asymptomatic blood donor was reported in Brevard County.

Dengue Acquired in Florida: In 2010, one case of dengue has been reported as acquired in Broward County and 53 cases of dengue have been reported as acquired in Key West (Monroe County). Of the Key West cases, 45 are Key West residents, eight are residents of other Florida counties, and one resides out of state. Onset dates ranged from March 17 to September 24, 2010.

First local dengue case outside Key West was a blood donor in Brevard County.


First Locally Acquired Case of Dengue Fever in Miami-Dade County

(Miami, FL – November 11, 2010) – Miami-Dade County Health Department officials received confirmation of the first locally acquired case of Dengue Fever in Miami-Dade County.

The individual was diagnosed with Dengue Fever based on symptoms and confirmed by laboratory tests. The individual fully recovered from this illness.

The first locally acquired case of dengue fever in Miami-Dade County in more than 50 years was confirmed Thursday by health officials. They warned people to take precautions against the mosquitoes that carry it.

``This is a big deal,'' said Lillian Rivera, administrator of the Miami-Dade Health Department.

``We have not had a locally acquired case of dengue fever since the 1950s,'' said Dr. Fermin Leguen, the department's chief epidemiologist.
