EASTERN EQUINE ENCEPHALITIS
Spike in cases of horses in Florida with encephalitis prompts vigilance

Rachael Jackson

March 29, 2008

With more horses than usual coming down with Eastern equine encephalitis, scientists are keeping a watchful eye on the mosquito-borne virus that can strike people in rare cases.

Since January, at least 12 horses in Florida -- six of them in Volusia County -- have died from confirmed or suspected cases of the disease that attacks the nervous system. Typically, about seven horses statewide are found to be infected by this time of year.
