Swine flu numbers are climbing again even though medical experts said they had plateaued after Christmas.
The number of people in the South Central strategic health authority seeing their GP with flu-like symptoms was 99.5 per 100,000 for the week ending Thursday last week.
This is a sharp rise from 66 consultations per 100,000 people the week before, when schools and doctors surgeries reopened after the festive season.
The predominant viruses are the usual seasonal flu and H1N1 strain, more commonly known as swine flu, but only a small proportion of cases result in serious disease.
Professor John Watson, Health Protection Agency head of respiratory diseases, said: "Flu is still circulating in the community and the message remains that those people in an at-risk group should have their seasonal flu vaccine as soon as possible as this is the best way to protect themselves from flu this winter."
