Thiruvananthapuram: The influenza A (H1N1) virus which took the lives of hundreds of people across the country in 2009 is all set to return to Kerala.
Since receiving an alert two weeks ago about the H1N1 virus, the state government is on alert and has distributed Tamiflu tablets to all hospitals and primary health centres.

Kerala on alert as H1N1cases continue to rise

With H1N1 cases being reported from some districts, the health authorities have sounded an alert across the state to deal with the emerging infection. There, however, is no massive spread.

Out of the seven cases this month, five have been reported from Kozhikode, and one each from Alappuzha and Thrissur.

Cases of Influenza-like Illness (ILI) are being reported from various other districts including Ernakulam, Thrissur and Malappuram.

H1N1 case in Thrissur


THRISSUR: A case of Influenza A (H1N1) virus was reported in Thrissur, with the Kasturba Hospital in Manipal confirming on Friday evening that the throat swab samples of a 22-year-old student from Bangalore sent by a private hospital here� were tested positive for the infection. Evidence of the H1N1 strain has been found in the patient?s nasal, throat secretions, swabs and blood samples in the test, DMO V V Venus said.

The patient was discharged following a few days? treatment in a private hospital here but the hospital authorities called him back after his throat samples tested positive, she said. The patient had come from Bangalore last week, where he was believed to have contracted the infection, hospital sources said.

H1N1 case reported in Alappuzha


ALAPPUZHA: A H1N1 case was reported in the district on Saturday. A 31-year-old woman from Chettikadu, Mararikulam, tested positive for the H1N1 strain. District Medical Officer (DMO) K M Shirabudheen has however said that the disease is under control in the district. Cases of jaundice were also reported in some parts of Alappuzha. The Health Department has already initiated steps to control the spread of diseases, the DMO said.

Jaundice has been reported in the Charummood-Nooranad area in the district. A youth died of the water-borne disease on Friday. Local people said that cases of jaundice were rising tremendously in the area. Three persons have reportedly died of the disease recently.

Thiruvananthpuram: The number of H1N1 cases in Kerala has touched a dozen, a health official said on Tuesday, adding that the the authorities were fully prepared to deal with the situation.

H1N1 nodal officer Amar S Fettle said that the maximum number of cases have been reported in Kozhikode, with districts like Thrissur, Malappuram, Kasargode and Alappuzha also reporting cases of resting positive for H1N1.

H1N1 case confirmed in Ernakulam



KOCHI: A case of H1N1 was confirmed in Ernakulam on Friday.
It is the second case reported this year in the district. The first case was diagnosed two weeks ago, District Medical Officer (DMO) R Sudhakaran said.
The details of the patient was not be revealed.
The case of H1N1 was confirmed after the swab was tested at the National Institute of Virology, Alappuzha. It is learnt that a woman from Thevara area has been infected with the virus. The medicines for the disease are available at all primary health centres in the district, the DMO said.

H1N1 influenza is back. With more than a dozen cases confirmed in the state, the health department has put all doctors in government and private hospitals on high alert for symptoms of the infection especially if accompanied by other health complications.
H1N1 screening centres have been opened in all taluk hospitals and other government hospitals in Ernakulam, from where two positive cases have been reported.

10 new H1N1 cases reported

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The fever situation in the state continues to be serious with 10 new H1N1 cases being identified on Wednesday. While five new cases were reported from Kozhikode, Malappuram had registered three, and Wayanad and Kannur one each.

Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Thrissur have been classified as sensitive districts by the crisis management team monitoring the situation.

"The crisis management team has found that more number of cases are being reported from these three districts. The district administrations in these districts have been alerted," chief minister Oommen Chandy told reporters after the cabinet meeting.

There will be district-level review meetings on Saturday to review the situation, and a special cabinet meeting on Monday will take stock of the situation.

The CM said there was no need for panic as the situation was under control. Referring to the visit by a Central team last year, which had alerted about a possible fever outbreak this year, Chandy said that was why the government had taken all precautions much earlier.

Chandy also denied the reports that the government was hiding statistics on fever cases for not revealing the actual situation. "I haven't come across such a complaint. I will see that statistics are provided to the media without fail from today," he said.

H1N1 reported from Kottayam


KOTTAYAM: The first case of H1N1 fever from the district this year was reported on Monday. The patient, Tincy (11), from Kumarakom, has been diagnosed with H1N1, said district medical officer (DMO) Dr Ayesha Bhai.

The girl is under treatment in the H1N1 cell of the district hospital here and is recovering, he said.

Six cases of dengue - two cases each in Arpookkara and Ayarkunnam and one each in Pampady and Thalayolaparambu - were also reported on Monday.

Seven cases of suspected dengue were also reported out of which two were from Vakathanam.

The DMO cautioned the public to be alert and said that extra care should be taken to remove stagnant waste water from each one's surroundings.

Four cases of suspected leptospirosis were also reported in Meenachil, Erattupetta, Kooroppada and Kadaplamattom.

There was a sharp increase in the number of viral fever cases on Monday. A total of 950 people approached health centres for medical help.

Five cases of chicken pox were also reported. with two cases in Ettumanoor and one each in Kadanadu, Kaduthuruthy and Kangazha.

Two H1N1 patients die in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 15 (PTI) Two persons, who tested positive for H1N1, died in Kerala even as 14 more swine flu cases have been reported, officials said today.

According to a release from the Directorate of Health Services, a 59-year-old man of Pallimoola in Thrissur district died in a private hospital on July 10.

He tested positive for the swine flu virus and the death was caused by broncho pneumonia and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), it said.

In another case, a 42-year-old woman, whose H1NI status was confirmed, died in a private hospital in Sulthan Bathery in Wayanad district yesterday, also due to ARDS, it said.

According to the release, 14 more cases of H1N1 have been reported since yesterday, taking the total number of afflicted patients to 359 since January this year.

Kasargod: Eight Suspected H1N1 Cases Detected at District General Hospital

Kasargod, Jul 28: Eight suspected cases of H1N1 were detected in Kajampady Colony, Perla, near here, and their samples are being dispatched to KMC Hospital, Manipal.

One-and-a-half-year-old Pratiksha, residing in Kajampady Colony, passed away due to H1N1 just two days ago and many are admitted to the General Hospital, here. The residents of the colony are worried due to the spreading of the communicable disease in their locality. The number of people seeking medical checks at the General Hospital is increasing everyday.

A total of 87 confirmed H1N1 cases have so far been detected in the district from June till date. Many were admitted for jaundice.

Two more H1N1 deaths reported in the state

KOCHI: Two more people have succumbed to H1N1 in Kerala, taking the toll in the state this year to 14, the state health department officials said on Saturday.

Sreekutty, an eight-year-old girl from Pazeri Paniya colony, near Chetalayam, Wayanad, and Chakkumpuram Kunheevi, 60, from Mongam in Malappuram district are the latest victims.

The total number of H1N1 cases reported in the state this year has reached 571, the health officials said.

The district-wise break-up of the cases is: Kozhikode-183, Malappuram-93, Thrissur-76, Kannur-64, Kasaragod-53, Wayanad-33, Alappuzha-21, Kottayam-17, Ernakulam-15, Palakkad-7, Kollam-4, Thiruvananthapuram-3 and Pathanamthitta-2.
