Health Officials Investigating Possible New Measles Case
Infant In Fond du Lac County Quarantined

FOND DU LAC COUNTY - Health officials in Fond du Lac County are investigating a possible new case of measles.

Tests are being done Tuesday, and if this case is confirmed to be measles, this would be the first case in Fond du Lac County in 18 years.

A young male infant showed symptoms on Saturday.

The outbreak is spreading. There are 4 confirmed cases in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties, and now about 10 possible cases in Racine, Walworth, and Fond du Lac counties.

TODAY?S TMJ4?s Michael George asked the health department in Fond du Lac County how they discovered the infant could have measles. "The child actually had some cold symptoms, a runny nose, and then had a fever of over 101 and then developed a rash,? a health department official said.

We're told the child is doing better and didn't require hospitalization. We've also heard he was below the age recommended to get the measles vaccine.

Test results show that a local infant doesn?t have measles, a finding officials touted as good news for the child and for public health.

?The response to this suspected case of measles tested our public health emergency response plan,? said Fond du Lac County Health Officer Diane Cappozzo in a press release Wednesday. ?We often learn something that we could do better when we activate our emergency response system to a real time event. This makes us better prepared if we would have to respond to such an event as an influenza pandemic.?

A local doctor had informed health officials that the infant might have the measles on Saturday, April 19. That news came on the heels of a measles outbreak in the Milwaukee area.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, measles is a very contagious but preventable viral illness that causes a high fever, cough and rash. Those infected may think they have a cold.

The press release also reminded parents to have their children vaccinated.
