I am seriously starting to think Foot and Mouth may be h5n1. Why else would it be showing up in all the same places as bird flu?

Eladdie - it is strange, isn't it? It just appears in the same areas as BF cases. Probably because the same areas are relying on livestock for their livelyhoods, and nothing more of a relation than that (lets hope).

Was from Feb 27 till today. All livestock markets to be opened tomorrow, and animal movements allowed in and out of the city. All livestock to be vaccinated, with 250,000 vaccinations planned.

Epidemics and pandemics have ecological and environmental underpinnings. The population frequently exceeds the "carrying capacity" of the land:

• humans pack in living space more tightly than is optimal
• to sustain the population, humans raise food animals in close proximity to each other, making their food animals vulnerable to illness
• short space causes poor humans to live too closely with the animals they raise for food increasing the probability of cross-species infection

It's no surprise to me that there are multiple disease outbreaks at once. Conditions are ripe. Such conditions occur in cycles in nature and create the ups and downs of the natural cycle.

Is it the way a complex biological system like planet earth cleanses itself?

Sure. We're one with nature, like it or not.

The flu is off the radar this week, but we're seeing cases of something we haven't seen in a while.

Dr. Jeffrey Gardner in Clovis reports seeing children with hand, foot mouth disease. it's an infection caused by a cold virus. It causes sores in the mouth and blisters on the feet and hands. Expect a sore throat and aches that go away in about a week. It is contagious.

He's also seeing bronchitis and skin infections caused by a fungus.

Dr. Paul Baker is a pediatrician with Kaiser Permanente Fresno. He is seeing children with strep. Look for a fever over 102, sore, red throat and enlarged lymph nodes. A throat swab is used to diagnose. Antibiotics are the treatment.

He's also seeing stomach flu caused by a virus and hand-foot-mouth disease.

Dr. Teri Brown is a pediatrician with Sequoia Family Medical in Porterville. She is seeing stomatitis caused by several viruses. It causes painful blisters in the mouth. No sour or spicy foods andkeep children hydrated with clear fluids. It lasts 4 to 9 days.

She's also treating kids with viral syndrome and diarrhea.

Dr. Lucia Mireles Chavez is with Fresno Children's Medical Group. Stomach flu tops her list. Symptoms can include vomiting and diarrhea. Keep the liquids flowing to prevent dehydration. Rest and wash hands to avoid spreading the germs.

She's also seeing upper respiratory infections and croup.
