Midway ISD fourth-grader dies of complications from swine flu virus

A South Bosque Elementary School fourth-grader who had been suffering from complications related to the H1N1 virus died at a San Antonio hospital Monday, according to an obituary sent to the Tribune-Herald.

Nicholas Joe Bolin, who was 9, became sick about five weeks ago. He was treated for the virus, also known as swine flu, at Scott & White Hospital in Temple and CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Children?s Hospital in San Antonio.

The obituary says that Nicholas enjoyed baseball, wrestling, water skiing and pingpong. He also liked reading, piano lessons, school activities and spending time with his older brother. He would have turned 10 on Dec. 30.

Julie Henry, a spokeswoman for Midway Independent School District, said students at South Bosque observed a moment of silence Tuesday in honor of Nicholas. The school also had counselors on hand to talk to students, she said.

Nicholas had not been at school for more than a month, Henry said. She called the boy?s death ?really, really sad.?

Nicholas Joe Bolin, of Waco, was called home to Heaven by our God Almighty Monday, Dec. 14, 2009, from Christus Santa Rosa Childrens Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, after his five-week fight against H1N1 complications. Memorial services will be on Saturday, December 19th, at 1 p.m., at Grace Gardens Funeral Home. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, at Grace Gardens Funeral Home. Nicholas was born Dec. 30, 1999, in Waco, to Roger Bruce Bolin and Stacey Jayne Bolin and big brother, Zachary Hunter Bolin. Nicholas attended Play & Learn Preschool, Waco Baptist School and South Bosque Elementary school all here in Waco. Nicholas enjoyed baseball, wrestling, water skiing, ping-pong, all school activities and spending time with his big brother "Zak", who was his best buddy and mentor. Favorite times were spent reading with "Sage" his kitty by his side and spending time with each of the family, together or separately. Nicholas enjoyed taking piano lessons from Sergio Bezerra and always had his GameBoy in his pocket. Remembering "Nick" at home on earth are his parents, Roger and Stacy; his best buddy, big brother Zachary; grandparents, Gammie and Papa, Karen and Dan Bolin of Oak Grove, Mo.; grandpa, Robert R. Bare of Clear Spring, Md.; grandmother, Suzanne G. Bare of Dallas, Texas; aunts and uncles; and numerous cousins; Mr. Pete and Ms. Joyce, of Play and Learn Preschool, who are special friends of Nicholas and his family. The family would like to thank the professional staff at Pediatric ICU Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas and the Pediatric ICU staff and ECMO team at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. These special people became a part of our extended family over the past five weeks, and were amazingly gracious with their love, care and knowledge.
