On Wednesday October 19, 2022, a suspected positive case of avian influenza was detected in a duck farm in Malicorne-sur-Sarthe . After a new test, it turned out that the farm in question was indeed contaminated. The 10,000 ducks were slaughtered on Thursday, October 20.
A precedent a few kilometers away in September
Since October 6, 2022 , three Sarthe municipalities had been classified as areas at particular risk: Notre-Dame-du-Pé, Précigné and La Chapelle-d'Aligné. This followed in particular a positive case of avian influenza detected in a duck farm located in the commune of Mézeray where, there too, the State services had carried out the slaughter of the animals in the outbreak and the sanitation of the 'breeding. “The breeding of Malicorne was very close to that of Mézeray, confirms Agnès Werner, the director of the departmental direction of the protection of the populations.Initially, this farm had been tested negative, but the situation is changing rapidly. On the other hand, there are no proven causal links on the transmission of the virus. It can come from wildlife. The environmental pressure is currently very strong. »
Setting up a restricted area
Following the slaughter of the ducks, the Prefecture of Sarthe defined a regulated perimeter of 10 km radius around the farm concerned, in accordance with the reinforced measures enacted on October 6, 2022 by the Prefect of Sarthe where the State services had detailed the measures: sheltering of poultry and daily surveillance, prohibition of gatherings of birds and application of special conditions for game and feather hunting. “The restricted area is substantially the same as that set up in the case of Mézeray, details Agnès Werner. An area of 3 km is the most closely monitored with frequent visits and samples taken from all farms. This will take at least eight days. »
Poultry soon all confined in Sarthe
Since October 19, 2022 , the animals have been living under the sheltering regime following the measures taken by the Ministry of Agriculture. Similarly, regular tests are carried out in the farms of the Pays de la Loire but also of Brittany as soon as it is a question of movement. Measures that seek to limit the spread of avian influenza, a highly contagious viral animal disease, as quickly as possible.
For the time being, it does not apply in Sarthe. “This measure will be effective during the last week of October, warns Agnès Werner. All farmed poultry must be sheltered and controls reinforced. “ A measure already in force in Loire-Atlantique and Vendée. “These departments had been affected by cases of avian influenza in wild animals. Contamination which had accelerated the containment process, this is not the case in Sarthe where wildlife is not in question. »
