They think the Tasmanian Devil lost genetic diversity during an evolutionary bottleneck period when population numbers got very low, and that made them vulnerable to this rare type cancer.

CHICAGO, June 27, 2011 (Reuters) ? Scientists are using high-tech gene sequencing machines in a desperate attempt to save the Tasmanian devil from an infectious cancer called devil facial tumor disease that is threatening to wipe out the species

"The disease is like nothing we know in humans or in virtually any other animal. It acts like a virus but it actually is spread by a whole cancerous cell that arose in one individual several decades ago," Penn State University's Stephan Schuster, who is working on the project, said in a statement...

Video footage taken deep in the remote Tarkine wilderness in Tasmania suggests a deadly facial cancer has infected the Tasmanian devil's last healthy, wild stronghold.

A devil with a lump on its left cheek was filmed as it gnawed at a carcass. ...
The consultant vet Colette Harmsen said the lesion on the devil's face looked ''very suspiciously'' like devil facial tumour disease, but only pathology would establish it for certain.

Dr Murchison recently tracked the disease back to a single female that died more than 15 years ago in Tasmania's north-east.

Since then it has travelled between animals across the state, now covering most devil habitat, and killing more than 80 per cent of wild devils, says the Save the Tasmanian Devil program.

Future bright for baby devils

There has been a baby boom at the Devil Ark facility in the New South Wales Barrington Tops, with the sanctuary welcoming 32 new Tasmanian Devil joeys during this year's breeding season.

It exceeds the 26 devils born last year and offers hope at a time when the animals continue to face extinction in Tasmania because of a deadly facial tumour disease.

Devil Ark is an open enclosure aimed at sustaining the population of the the endangered species and was opened in the Barrington Tops last year.

Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD) has now affected more than 90 per cent of the wild Tasmanian Devil population and 90 per cent of the Tasmanian landscape.

But the Devil Ark sanctuary is already looking forward and hopes to release several healthy marsupials onto an island off Tasmania by the end of the year.

A research team headed by University of Tasmania immunologist Greg Woods has established how the disfiguring cancer, spread from devil to devil by biting during fights, manages to take hold and grow so rapidly.

Scientists have long believed that successive generations of inbreeding which has seen the species' genetic diversity dwindle, weakening their immune systems, was the main factor in the cancer's devastating impact.

But the team found a key immune-triggering marker usually seen on the surface of mammalian cells, called the major histocompatibility complex molecule (MHC), was not found in DTFD cells.

Devil tumor isn?t the only form of cancer ever to achieve such a feat. Other cases have occurred and are still occurring. The most notable is Canine Transmissible Venereal Tumor (CTVT), also called Sticker?s sarcoma, a sexually transmitted malignancy in dogs. Again, this is not merely an infectious virus that tends to induce cancer. The tumor cells themselves are transmitted during sexual contact. CTVT is widespread (though not common) and has been claiming dogs around the world at least since a Russian veterinarian named M. A. Novinsky first noted it in 1876. The distinctively altered chromosome patterns shared by the cells of CTVT show the cancer?s lineal continuity, its identity across space and through time. Tumor cells in Dog B, Dog C, Dog D, and Dog Z are more closely related to one another than those cells are to the dogs they respectively inhabit. In other words, CTVT can be conceptualized as a single creature, a parasite (and not a species of parasite, but an individual), which has managed to spread itself out among millions of different dogs. Research by molecular geneticists suggests the tumor originated in a wolf, or maybe an East Asian dog, somewhere between 200 and 2,500 years ago, which means that CTVT is probably the oldest continuous lineage of mammal cells presently living on Earth. The dogs may be young, but the tumor is ancient.
Unlike devil tumor?now known as Devil Facial Tumor Disease, or DFTD?CTVT is generally not fatal. It can be cured with veterinary surgery or chemotherapy. In many cases, even without treatment, the dog?s immune system eventually recognizes the CTVT as alien, attacks it, and clears it away, just as our own immune systems eventually rid us of warts.
The case of the Syrian hamster is more complicated. This tumor arose around 1960, when researchers at the National Cancer Institute, in Bethesda, Maryland, performed an experiment in which they harvested a naturally occurring sarcoma from one hamster and injected those cells (as cancer scientists often do) into healthy animals. When the injected hamsters developed malignancies, more cells were harvested. Each such inoculation-and-harvest cycle is called a passage. The experiment involved a dozen such passages, and over time the tumor began to change. It had evolved. The later generations, unlike the first, represented a sort of super tumor, capable of getting from hamster to hamster without benefit of a needle. The researchers caged ten healthy hamsters together with ten cancerous hamsters and found that nine of the healthy animals acquired tumors through social contact. The hamster tumor had leapt between animals?or anyway, it had been smeared, spat, bitten, and dribbled between them. (The tenth hamster got cannibalized before it could sicken.) In a related experiment, the tumor even passed between two hamsters separated by a wire screen. The scientists had in effect created a laboratory precursor of what would eventually afflict Tasmanian devils in the wild: a Frankenstein malignancy, a leaping tumor, which could conceivably kill off not just individuals but an entire species...
 
Saving devils, in a single disease-free corner of Tasmania

Drive over one narrow isthmus in Tasmania, and then another, and you'll reach the last place on Earth where wild Tasmanian devils live apart from a contagious cancer that threatens the fearsome marsupials' existence. Conservationists are doing everything they can to keep it that way.

Devil-proof barriers, flashing roadside alarms and infrared cameras are protecting the species from their two greatest threats: cancer and cars. There are even plans for a sort of trap door that would keep diseased devils from crossing a bridge to reach the Tasman Peninsula, on the east coast of the Australian island-state.

"Saving the wild devils on the Tasman Peninsula is the Holy Grail of the whole thing?can we save a natural, wild population of devils and isolate them?" said John Hamilton, a major partner in the Peninsula Devil Conservation Project. "And pretty much we have so far."
