Measles case reported in Atlanta; DPH seeks those who may have been exposed

An unvaccinated metro Atlanta resident contracted measles, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH), and the agency is working to identify any persons that may have been exposed through contact with the individual between Jan. 19 and Jan. 24, when they were infectious.

The individual acquired the virus while traveling within the United States.

This is the first reported measles case in Georgia in 2025; last year, DPH reported six cases of measles.​..

DPH Confirms Sixth Measles Case of 2025

Unvaccinated Family Member of Previous Case


ATLANTA – The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) has confirmed a sixth case of measles in Georgia in 2025. The unvaccinated individual is a family member of the confirmed measles case in May. The individual was quarantined at home following exposure, so there are no additional exposures outside of the home that require follow-up.

The other two cases associated with this outbreak have fully recovered, and monitoring has ended for individuals exposed to the index case in May.

The best protection against measles, mumps, and rubella is the MMR vaccine. The vaccine is safe and effective. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that children receive their first dose of MMR vaccine between 12 and 15 months of age and a second dose between 4 and 6 years of age. More than 95% of the people who receive a single dose of MMR will develop immunity to all three viruses. A second dose boosts immunity, typically enhancing protection to 98%.

This is the sixth reported case of measles in Georgia in 2025, and the second outbreak of the year. In 2024, there were six reported cases of measles in the state.​

An unvaccinated Georgia State University student has been diagnosed with measles, the seventh case in Georgia this year, after spending time on campus, at Inter Atlanta FC soccer games and practices, and at a restaurant at Ponce City Market over a nine-day period.

The amount of time the patient spent in public while potentially infectious between Sept. 2 and 11 will require “an absolutely massive contact investigation,” said Scott Thorpe, executive director of the Southern Alliance for Public Health Leadership.

The student spent time while infectious in two buildings at GSU (the Aderhold Learning Building and Langdale Hall), at the Sweetgreen restaurant on North Avenue, and at Inter Atlanta FC soccer practices and games, according to a Georgia Department of Public Health press release issued Friday.
