German, 55, dies shortly after receiving H1N1 vaccination

A 55-year-old man died in the east German city of Eichsfeld on Thursday only hours after being vaccinated against the swine flu virus, the daily Thueringer Allgemeine reported Sunday.

Berlin, Nov 16, (IRNA) -- The unidentified victim received the swine flu shot Thursday morning but died late Thursday night. An autopsy is expected to be performed on the man.

It was unclear whether the victim had a previous illness.

At least 15 people have died so far and tens of thousands have been diagnosed with having the swine flu disease.

The German government began last month a nationwide vaccination program, however many people were initially reluctant to get the vaccination because of the unforeseen side-effects of the swine flu vaccine.

Depending upon how many people are vaccinated, the program will cost the government and private insurers between 600 million euros and one billion euros.

Only every fourth German can presently be vaccinated as a result of the sluggish production of H1N1 vaccine.

Erfurt, Germany - An autopsy has been ordered on a man who died five hours after receiving a vaccination against swine flu, officials in the central German city of Erfurt said Monday.

Germany has bought 50 million doses of the vaccine to offer free to as many of its 80 million people who want protection, but an old and passionate controversy about whether vaccines are good or bad has flared anew among the public and the media.

While pro-vaccine Germans have clamoured at medical centres for their jabs, anti-vaccination groups claim that the vaccine contains dangerous levels of mercury and is potentially lethal. The man's death has become major news.

The Ministry of Social Affairs in the state of Thuringia said the 55-year-old man who died last Thursday had received his jab, then went out to play bowls. On returning home he felt unwell and phoned an emergency doctor, who was unable to save his life.

The man had no medical history of health problems. Pathologists will look for evidence of any connection between his death and the vaccination, and a report will take several days to complete.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says lengthy tests have shown the vaccine is safe and has very few side-effects. Germany began vaccinating last month. So far doctors have not been able to keep up with the high demand.

Last week a 65-year-old German woman with cardiac illness died just after being vaccinated, but an official doctor who examined the body said the vaccine had not been the cause of death.

A spokesman in Thuringia said Germans should bear in mind that the A(H1N1) influenza virus was far more dangerous to people's health and lives than the vaccine against it, with 16 people in Germany having died so far from the disease.

Autopsy revealed that the flu shot has not been the cause of death in the 55 year old man from Thuringia, German health officials said today. A medical examiner found that the man had an acute myocardial infarction that even might have begun prior to the vaccination. Thus, an adverse event due to the vaccine was excluded.

Nach dem pl?tzlichen Tod eines Mannes in Th?ringen, der sich zuvor gegen Schweinegrippe impfen lie?, geriet die Immunisierung als Todesursache in Verdacht. Nun habe der Obduktionsbericht allerdings best?tigt, dass der Mann an den Folgen eines Herzinfarkts gestorben sei, sagte ein Sprecher des Th?ringer Gesundheitsministeriums am Montag.

Der 55-J?hrige hatte sich vergangenen Donnerstag impfen lassen und war Stunden sp?ter gestorben. Daher war ?ber einen Zusammenhang zwischen dem Todesfall und der Impfung spekuliert worden. Bei der Obduktion des Mannes stellten die Mediziner jedoch eine Koronarsklerose, also eine Verengung der Herzkranzgef??e, fest. Das berichtete die ?Th?ringer Allgemeine? unter Berufung auf die Amts?rztin des Landkreises Eichsfeld, Judith Rahrig, die von der Rechtsmedizin in Jena ?ber die Obduktionsergebnisse unterrichtet worden sei. ?Der Beginn des Herzinfarkts liegt nach bisherigem Kenntnisstand schon vor der Impfung. Ein Einfluss der Impfung auf den Tod des Mannes ist nicht abzuleiten?, sagte Judith Rahrig der Zeitung.

Zuvor hatte Th?ringens Gesundheitsministerin Heike Taubert (SPD) erneut appelliert, sich gegen die Schweinegrippe impfen zu lassen. Es sei aber wichtig, sich vorher mit dem Hausarzt ?ber eventuelle Unvertr?glichkeiten oder Vorerkrankungen zu beraten, sagte sie der ?Th?ringer Allgemeinen?.
