Berlin outbreak blasts hopes of eradicating measles in Germany by 2015

There's new pressure on parents to vaccinate their kids against measles as outbreaks spread in California and Berlin. Germany had wanted to eradicate measles by 2015. Some are blaming migrants and tourists.

Germany's Robert Koch Institute (RKI) said the country faces its largest outbreak of measles since the introduction of an Infection Protection Act in 2001.

The RKI said there have been 375 cases of measles in Germany in the past four months. More than half of infected people are adults.

But in January, the RKI said the number of new cases rose rapidly by 254, with 82 of those cases reported in the fourth week of the month...

BERLIN, Germany ? A toddler has died of measles in the German capital, health authorities said Monday, February 23, amid the country's worst outbreak in years and an intense debate about steps to boost vaccinations.

The 18-month-old boy died on February 18 - the first known fatality among more than 570 recorded measles cases since October in the German capital - a Berlin health department official told Agence France-Presse...

Toddler died from measles in Berlin


In Berlin, an infant measles died. The child at the age of one and a half years had died on 18 February in a hospital from the infectious disease, said Berlin Health Senator Mario Czaja (CDU) on Monday. How it has been infected, is still unclear.

Due to the outbreak of infectious disease in the capital a school had been closed as a precaution for a day on Monday also.

Reason for the closure of the secondary school in the district Lichtenrade is a serious course of infectious disease in an adolescent, a spokeswoman for the Berlin Senate.

The headmaster found out on Friday from the case and can keep up with the health department consultation until Monday. Classmates and teachers of young people would now have to submit Impfb?cher. On Tuesday, the school will reportedly open again.
