Avian flu variant in mallard ducks in the Lake Constance district: precautionary measures and registration of poultry keeping

In a mallard hunted in the Salem area in the first calendar week of 2022, the Friedrich-Löffler-Institut found low-pathogenic (slightly disease-causing) bird flu viruses of the serotype H7 during preventive routine examinations. The veterinary office at the Bodenseekreis district office therefore asks for increased caution when keeping poultry.

At the end of the previous year, four swans and one goose found dead in the vicinity of Donaueschingen were officially diagnosed with avian influenza of the subtype H5N1. Because of the close proximity to Lake Constance, it is still to be expected that the epidemic will occur again in waterfowl around Lake Constance this winter. The Lake Constance District Veterinary Office rates the risk of further spread in water bird populations and entry into poultry holdings as high. According to the Robert Koch Institute, the risk of transmission to humans is very low.

Avian influenza detected in a wild bird in Berlin

In Berlin, a case of avian influenza was detected in a wild bird for the first time this season. It is a seagull that was found dead on a jetty in the Rummelsburg Bay last week and was taken to the Berlin-Brandenburg state laboratory for animal disease diagnostics by the veterinary and food supervisory authority of the Lichtenberg district office. The confirmation of the virus subtype H5N1 was carried out yesterday by the national reference laboratory at the Friedrich Loeffler Institute. The Berlin veterinary authorities are currently examining whether and, if so, which measures should be taken. The public will be informed of this immediately.

Bird flu suspected in Karlsruhe Zoo
Karlsruhe – After a bird flu detection in a gray heron in Karlsruhe, there are also three suspected cases in the zoo.

As the city announced on Wednesday, samples of the dead animals - two Hawaiian geese and a pelican - are being examined at the Friedrich Löffler Institute (FLI). To protect other zoo birds, some were brought indoors.

Aviaries were taken down to prevent animals from being infected by wild birds. The exotic house was temporarily closed to visitors. Protective measures have been in place in individual zoo areas for weeks and are now being tightened.

“So far we have always been lucky that our own stocks at the zoo have not been affected. However, if the suspected cases are confirmed, we hope that the virus will not spread further," said zoo director Matthias Reinschmidt.

At the beginning of the month, avian influenza was detected in a bird of prey in Donaueschingen and in a red-breasted goose in the zoo in Heidelberg. "The risk of an outbreak of avian influenza is considered high," said Karlsruhe.

Poultry farmers were called upon to take precautions against a possible entry of the virus into their own animal husbandry via shoes and clothing. Dangers from contact with wild birds could be significantly reduced by close-meshed fences with roofing and stable housing. Depending on the danger situation, a stable obligation was not ruled out.

In several communities in the Schwarzwald-Baar and Tuttlingen districts, domestic poultry have to stay in the barn. The reason was the discovery of a sick buzzard with neurological disorders, in which the highly contagious avian influenza virus H5N1 was detected. The seriously ill animal was killed. More cases of avian influenza in wild birds in Berlin

Three weeks after the first occurrence of avian influenza in wild birds this year, further cases have now been confirmed in Berlin. The H5N1 subtype virus was confirmed in 14 swans from the Landwehr Canal in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district and in one swan in the Treptow-Köpenick district. This means that a total of 28 cases of H5N1 avian influenza in wild birds are officially known in Berlin.
