African swine fever found in wild boar in Spree-Neisse


The swine fever is now also in Germany: The infected wild boar was found in the immediate vicinity of pig herds in Oder-Spree. A meeting of the ASP district disaster management team is scheduled.

African swine fever (ASF) has arrived in Germany. According to Gundula Teltewskaja, alderman in the Oder-Spree district, the virus was detected in a wild boar in the neighboring Spree-Neisse district - in the Sembten district, a district of the Schenkend?bern community. The site is located in the immediate vicinity of pig stocks in Oder-Spree, she explained to the Committee on Building, Order and Environment. For Thursday she has scheduled a meeting of the ASP district disaster management team.



Delimitation and security of the pig population


The most important task is no longer the construction of a permanent protective fence to Poland, but the demarcation of the place of discovery and the safeguarding of the pig population. A fence is now being drawn in a four-kilometer radius around the site . This area clearly extends into the Oder-Spree district . The Neuzelle office is apparently particularly affected. The district bought the necessary fence material months ago. The neighboring district of Dahme-Spreewald is also preparing for an ASF outbreak. Wild boar carcass is examined

First case of African swine fever in a wild boar in Germany

The African swine fever virus ( ASF ) was detected in a wild boar found dead in Brandenburg near the German-Polish border . The Berlin-Brandenburg State Laboratory detected specific genome sequences of the ASF virus in the samples taken on site. The National Reference Laboratory for ASP of the Friedrich Loeffler Institute ( FLI ) on the island of Riems confirmed the finding on September 10, 2020. It is the first case of ASF in Germany.

Bones found in the largely decayed carcass were sampled. It can therefore be assumed that the entry took place a few weeks ago.

According to the assessment of the FLI, the risk of the pathogen being introduced into Germany was classified as high. The physical distance to the nearest confirmed case of ASF in Poland is only 30 km. The proximity to the German-Polish border of about 6 km makes an entry by a migrating wild boar likely. However, introduction by humans through contaminated food cannot be ruled out. The responsible veterinary authorities on site must now take the necessary measures. The ASP has been spreading in the Asian-European region since 2007 and reached the eastern border of the EU in 2014 . The ASPspread through human activities such as improper disposal of contaminated food. This led to entries in the Czech Republic and Belgium, both of which were successfully deleted. The erection of fences has made an important contribution here. Brandenburg also erected a protective fence against the ASP on the border with Poland in December 2019 .

It is now extremely important for farmers to carefully observe farm biosecurity. This still offers the best protection against the pathogen entering livestock populations. The pig keeping hygiene regulation serves as the legal basis for this.

Dead wild boars should continue to be intensively examined nationwide for the presence of ASF , wild boars found dead should be reported immediately to the competent authority. This is usually done by calling. A marking and georeferencing of the site facilitate the further procedure. A photo of the location and the animal's body would also be desirable. It remains important to dispose of possibly contaminated pig products such as sausage and meat in such a way that wild and domestic pigs have no access. Vehicles, clothing, footwear and equipment that could have been contaminated during hunting , for example , should be cleaned and disinfected.

The federal states are responsible for implementing the epidemic protection measures of the Swine Fever Ordinance, in particular the establishment of restricted areas and observation areas. In some states exercises have ASP occurred -combat. Regular task force meetings on the current situation and issues related to disease control are under the leadership of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

World of a vaccine against the will to develop ASP research, use in practice is, however, not be available in the foreseeable future. The virus reservoir of the ASP is the wild boar population, the pathogen is transmitted from pig to pig through blood and droplets. The virus of ASP affects only pigs (wild and domestic pigs) and is not transferable to humans. The consumption of wild boar is still safe.

African swine fever - estimating movement patterns with satellite data

In order to contain the approaching African swine fever, its main vector, the wild boar, must be closely followed. So far, however, it has been impossible to generate movement data for wild boars across the board. Germany confirms African swine fever cases in five more wild boars

HAMBURG (REUTERS) - Five more cases of African swine fever (ASF) found in wild boars in the eastern German state of Brandenburg on Tuesday have been confirmed, the Brandenburg state government and federal agriculture ministry said on Wednesday (Sept 16).

This brings to six the number of cases of swine fever confirmed in wild boars in Germany in the last week.

The disease was found in dead wild boars, not farmed animals, close to the location of the first confirmed case of ASF last week, the Brandenburg state health ministry said.

Germany's Friedrich-Loeffler scientific institute had confirmed the animals had ASF following positive initial tests in Brandenburg state laboratories, the federal ministry said.

African swine fever: So far 13 positive wild boars in Brandenburg

The National Reference Laboratory for African Swine Fever ( ASF ) at the Friedrich Loeffler Institute has so far confirmed 13 virus detections in wild boars in Brandenburg. The first case from 09/10 was found in a carcass of a two to three year old brook in the Spree-Neisse district; the other 12 cases in wild boars were discovered near the community of Neuzelle in the Oder-Spree district and thus in the endangered area designated by the state of Brandenburg. All of them were initially tested positive in the responsible veterinary state laboratory in Berlin-Brandenburg and samples were then sent to the national reference laboratory at FLI for clarification .

In light of the experience in other of the ASP is anticipated States concerned that the disease situation is at the beginning. In addition, one of the wild boars in the Oder-Spree district was found sick and shot. This also indicates an ongoing epidemic. Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut confirms: Seven more cases of African swine fever in wild boars in Brandenburg

A total of 20 confirmed cases - the disease is harmless to humans - domestic pig herds are still not affected

The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) informs that the official suspicion of African swine fever (ASF) has been confirmed in seven other wild boars in Brandenburg. The national reference laboratory - the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) - detected the animal disease in the corresponding samples. The sites are within the endangered area.

29 carcasses found - Brandenburg intensifies crisis management

There are now 29 infected carcasses. With fences and dogs, the spread of the disease should be prevented.


The number of wild boars infected with African swine fever continues to rise. In the meantime, 29 cadavers have been found in Brandenburg that carry the virus, which is deadly for pigs but harmless to humans, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture announced on Wednesday. Domestic pigs have not yet been affected.

Brandenburg is intensifying its efforts to prevent further spread. In the Spree-Neisse district on the Polish border, the previous electric fence is to be replaced by a permanent fence in order to prevent further immigration of Polish wild boars.

The Brandenburg Ministry of Consumer Protection announced on Wednesday that the entire 120-kilometer-long mobile fence on the border with Poland, which has many epidemic cases, will gradually be replaced by a fixed barrier.

Another permanent fence is to be erected later around the core area in Brandenburg, where dead wild boars have been discovered. So far, the districts of Spree-Neisse and Oder-Spree have been affected. An area of ​​60 kilometers in length is cordoned off and cannot be entered by walkers.

Search dogs from Schleswig-Holstein and Rhineland-Palatinate try to track down other carcasses. Only when all infected pigs have been found should the core area be cordoned off with a solid fence.

BERLIN, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- With three previously suspected cases of African swine fever (ASF) in wild boars in Brandenburg, northern Germany, being confirmed, the total number of confirmed ASF cases in Germany has risen to 32, the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) announced on Thursday.

The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute (FLI), the Federal Research Institute for Animal Health, confirmed the animal disease in the respective samples. The sites where the three wild boars were discovered were all located within the designated risk area.

Two weeks ago, the first case of ASF was confirmed in a wild boar in Brandenburg, whereupon local officials established a risk area with a radius of 15 km around the first discovery site...

Potsdam - The suspicion of African swine fever (ASF) was confirmed in another wild boar on Monday. This was announced by the Ministry of Consumer Protection. The result was determined by the National Reference Laboratory. There are now 36 infected animals in Brandenburg.
