For the first time in a human infection in Germany with the tropical Usutu virus has been detected. It was detected in a blood donor, as a total of 4200, blood samples were assayed for antibodies.
This virologist Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit the Bernhard Nocht Institute (BNI) for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg said Monday. The affected man from Gross-Gerau (Hesse) claims to have shown any symptoms of illness. Originating from Africa Usutu virus had done last summer in southwest Germany in mass death of blackbirds. Also this summer the dozen birds die. Usutu virus was found in mosquitoes (Culex pipiens) in Germany and can be transmitted to humans. The donations came, according to the BNI all from the outbreak region between Frankfurt and Freiburg and were taken in January this year. According to experts, the infection of the man at that time was not so long ago. Schmidt Chanasit warned against overestimating the Fund. "Yes, there has been an infection, but it is now not dramatic, after all it is only one of 4200 - just do not panic,"
