Avian influenza in Oder-Spree 9,500 Peking ducks have to be killed in Philadelphia (Storkow)
16.03.21 | 12:18 pm

The first case of avian influenza occurred in a domestic poultry population in the Oder-Spree district. Affected is an animal herd in Philadelphia, a district of Storkow. The finding was confirmed on Monday by the Berlin-Brandenburg State Laboratory and the Friedrich Loeffler Institute and thus the H5N1 pathogen was already identified last Saturday.

Restricted area established

According to the district's veterinary office, the total of 9,500 Peking ducks were culled and disposed of as a precaution. In addition, the three stables affected must be cleaned and disinfected. In addition, a restricted area has been designated within a radius of three kilometers from the property in question. The radius of ten kilometers is considered an observation area. There the poultry farmers have to house their animals in stalls.
Tenth case in Brandenburg

The first cases of avian influenza were detected in Germany at the beginning of November last year. Since then, the virus has also spread in Berlin and Brandenburg. As the Senate Department announced last week, seven cases of avian influenza have occurred in Berlin so far. Together with the current case in Storkow, ten outbreaks have now been recorded in Brandenburg.

Spree-Neisse First case of avian influenza in Brandenburg detected this autumn
11/01/21 | 2:38 pm

The first case of avian influenza was detected in Brandenburg this autumn in a farm of poultry in the Spree-Neisse district. The Brandenburg Ministry of Health announced this in Potsdam on Monday.

As the spokesman for the ministry Dominik Lenz said, more than 200 ducks, geese and chickens were kept at the direct marketer in Burg. Several of these died. The stock was immediately blocked and sampled.

The virus of the subtype H5N1 was detected in the Berlin-Brandenburg state laboratory. The Friedrich Löffler Institute (FLI) as the national reference laboratory confirmed the suspicion that it was a highly pathogenic variant of the virus...

11/08/2021 | 04:03 | Bird flu
Avian influenza in Schleswig-Holstein: 500 fattening geese culled
Elmshorn - A farm in the Pinneberg district is affected by the avian influenza, around 500 fattening geese and other poultry had to be killed on Saturday.

This was announced by the district administration in Elmshorn. It is the third case in Schleswig-Holstein this autumn. Several laboratories examined samples after numerous geese showed symptoms of the disease.

The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut confirmed that this is the influenza subtype H5N1, which can trigger the so-called avian influenza or bird flu. "We hope that the quick action of all those involved will help to prevent the virus from spreading further," said Uwe Koltzau, head of the security and consumer protection service at the Pinneberg district.

As of Sunday, according to the district's veterinary office, all poultry farmers must have protection and surveillance zones, including compulsory stalls, as well as other measures to protect against avian influenza. Stables have also been mandatory in Hamburg since the weekend.

Influenza viruses can be transmitted through the air, but above all through direct contact with infected animals and contaminated materials such as litter, but also with shoes. Avian influenza often first occurs in wild geese with the migration of birds in autumn.

Avian influenza, also known as avian influenza, is an infectious disease that occurs primarily in waterfowl and other birds. Avian influenza is a notifiable animal disease and is therefore controlled by the state. Although experts from the Robert Koch Institute and the Friedrich Loeffler Institute do not rule out the transmission of the H5N8 virus to humans, they point out that such cases of illness have not yet been observed in humans.

Avian influenza
H5N1 confirmed in turkeys

In the turkey population in Friesoythe, district of Cloppenburg, the subtype H5N1 of the avian influenza virus was detected by the Food and Veterinary Institute (LVI) of the Lower Saxony State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (LAVES).

The farm is a turkey farm with around 9,400 turkey roosters aged around 17 weeks. The killing and evacuation of the stock was ordered.

The district of Cloppenburg will publish a new general decree for the determination of the restriction areas (3 km protection zone and 10 km surveillance zone), which will come into force on November 13, 2021 at 0:00 a.m.
Restoration ban area is shifting

With the new general decree, the area, which is prohibited from reinstalling, is shifting further south with a radius of 25 km. The ban on housing for ducks and turkeys will then apply to the entire municipality of Garrel. The general decree for the no reinstallation area comes into force on November 15, 2021 at midnight.
So far only confirmed H5 in the district of Nienburg

Avian influenza H5 was detected in a turkey farm in the joint municipality of Grafschaft Hoya, district of Nienburg. The LVI has officially confirmed the evidence. There are around 9,900 turkeys around 20 weeks old. The district of Nienburg prepares the general decrees for the restriction areas. The killing and evacuation of the animal population was ordered.

Please note the information posted online, general directives and applications from the districts concerned. In the district of Cloppenburg you will find an interactive map with the restricted areas.

Suspected case confirmed from the previous day / infected animals at poultry farmer in Thonhausen

Late on Thursday evening, the Altenburger Land veterinary office received the evaluation of the laboratory test from the Friedrich Loeffler Institute. As a result, the suspected case was confirmed. It is the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) of the subtype H5N1, the causative agent of avian influenza.

This means that on December 2, 2021, the first case of avian influenza in domestic poultry farming this winter in Thuringia was officially established. A commercial poultry farmer in Thonhausen is affected. In this, the Thuringian State Office for Consumer Protection (TLV) detected the causative agent of avian influenza. The National Reference Laboratory at the Friedrich Loeffler Institute confirmed the results of the TLV yesterday....

Avian influenza in Schleswig-Holstein: Evidence in small poultry farming in the Steinburg district - dynamic spread in wild birds

Kiel (agrar-PR) - In the Steinburg district, avian influenza has been officially identified in a small poultry farm with four chickens. After avian influenza of subtype H5 was detected in a sample taken by the responsible veterinary office from a dead chicken in the state laboratory in Neumünster, the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) confirmed an infection with the avian influenza virus of subtype H5N1. The legally prescribed animal welfare killing of all remaining chickens and the professional disposal of all dead and killed animals in the keeping have already taken place.
A restricted zone will be set up around the outbreak operation, consisting of a protection zone of at least three kilometers and a surveillance zone of at least ten kilometers. In the exclusion zone, certain legally prescribed regulations for poultry farming apply. These include a ban on moving live poultry. Further information will be provided by the Steinburg district.

Overall, avian influenza outbreaks have occurred in four farms in the districts of Steinburg, Dithmarschen and Pinneberg since autumn 2021. As a result of the outbreaks, a total of around 4,000 poultry had to be killed on the farms affected. The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut detected the avian influenza virus subtype H5N1 in all cases.

Since autumn 2021, as part of a dynamic event, a total of 189 wild birds from ten districts (North Friesland, Dithmarschen, Steinburg, Pinneberg, Plön, Rendsburg-Eckernförde, Schleswig-Flensburg, Segeberg, Duchy of Lauenburg, East Holstein) and the independent city of Lübeck have been infected with the avian influenza virus proven. In all cases it is the H5N1 subtype. The affected species spectrum is large and includes various geese (barnacle, gray, brent goose, Canada, shelduck), ducks (wigeon, eider, scoter, mallard), gulls (coat, laughing, herring gull), Snipe birds (curlew), other plover species (oystercatchers), birds of prey (buzzard, falcon), swans and a raven. Samples from other wild birds are currently being investigated.

The districts of North Friesland, Dithmarschen, Plön, Pinneberg, Duchy of Lauenburg, Ostholstein, Steinburg and Rendsburg-Eckernförde have issued a district-wide stabling requirement within their area of responsibility. Information on this is available from the respective veterinary offices.

On November 23, 2021, the Ministry of Agriculture issued a nationwide binding general decree with so-called biosecurity measures for all private and commercial keepers. The biosecurity measures include, among other things, that separate protective clothing including separate shoes must be worn in the postures. All poultry holdings must set up disinfection mats or tubs for shoe disinfection in front of the entrances to the stables. People must wash and disinfect their hands immediately before entering the area. Means of transport such as vehicles and containers must be cleaned and disinfected immediately after each use. In addition, the consumption of poultry via markets, exchanges or mobile trading is prohibited. The Ministry of Agriculture has made a handout available for small businesses and hobbyists, which contains information on the practical implementation of the general decree.

The spread of the avian influenza pathogen in the wild bird population is determined by means of monitoring that takes place all year round in Schleswig-Holstein and is intensified again at the beginning of autumn. Citizens can support this by reporting finds of dead wild water birds as well as birds of prey and owls in Schleswig-Holstein to the veterinary office of the respective district and city. Animals that have died or appear sick should not be touched, caught or removed from the site in order to avoid spreading the disease...
