Ghana Health Service issues cholera outbreak alert

The Ghana Health Service has warned of a possible cholera outbreak in Accra due to the current insanitary conditions in the capital coupled with the onset of the rains.

The Greater Accra regional health directorate of the service said waste disposal in the capital has become a major challenge following the shutdown of the Accra Compost Plant.

Cholera Kills 2 And 350 Hospitalized
July 22, 2014-

An outbreak of cholera has left two persons dead and 350 hospitalised as insanitary conditions in the capital worsen with the onset of the rains.

The figures, according to Deputy Director of Health for the Greater Accra Region Dr. John Eleaza has been recorded in the last three weeks in four out of Greater Accra?s 16 districts.

Speaking to JOY NEWS, he said the Accra Metro recorded 274, Ga West, 14, La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly 58 and the Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipality recording four cases.

The outbreak confirms fears expressed by the Ghana Health Service in May that a breakdown in tthe waste management system in the capital could spark an epidemic as the rainy season began...

Health facilities in Accra under pressure of mounting cholera cases

Korle -Bu Polyclinic is still overwhelmed with cholera cases. The isolation units are full to capacity.

The Polyclinic despite this challenge is making frantic efforts to create more isolation centres to treat the increasing number of patients.

Radio Ghana?s correspondent reports that authorities at the Polyclinic are worried as treated and discharged cholera patients are relapsing.

Meanwhile, family members nursing cholera victims are at risk of infection since most of them are not protected from the disease.

This is because those who cared for the relatives on admission are likely to carry the disease home and infect other members of their families.

This might explain the rising number of cases.

Health officials fear they might run out of medication to control the already worsening situation facing the country...

The Cholera outbreak that had hit Ghana?s capital, Accra few months ago has finally reached the Volta Region, precisely Aflao, the capital of the Ketu South Municipality and Nkwanta in the Nkwanta North District.

So far five people are reported dead with two confirmed at the Ketu South Municipal Hospital in Aflao, which is home to Ghana?s main Eastern border while the other three were confirmed at the St Joseph?s Hospital at Nkwanta.

About 53 cases have been reported in the Ketu South Municipality as at last Thursday afternoon, August 21, says the Municipal Disease Control Officer, David Agbokpe.

The Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Joseph Teye Nuertey confirmed this and added that 41 cases have so far been recorded at Nkwanta.

This is happening just a week after the Deputy Director of Public Health at the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate exclaimed about the alarming rate of infections in the region. Others have described the Accra situation as an epidemic.

The situation in Accra had claimed more lives within last week, compared to the dreaded Ebola disease in Sierra Leone and Liberia in the same period. Over 3,000 cases have been recorded at various facilities across the region in June, claiming at least 40 lives as at last week Wednesday morning...

Ghana suffocates under cholera outbreak

FIFTY-ONE persons in the Greater Accra Region have so far lost their lives as a result of the recent deadly cholera outbreak, reports Dr. Linda Van-Otoo, Regional Director of Health Services.

?The Greater Accra Region has so far recorded 6,179 cases of cholera and 51 deaths out of this number,? according to her.

The cases are mostly in the capital city where health facilities have been inundated with patients and still counting.

Dr. Van-Ottoo was speaking at the inauguration of the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council Sanitation Task Force yesterday in Accra.

She indicated that the region was near recording a total of 10,000 cases since the outbreak in June.

?All the health centres within the region are recording about 300 cases daily and over 1,000 cases weekly,? Dr. Van-Otoo disclosed.

According to her, a lot of the cases in the region were happening in the slums, business districts and places where people have poor access to toilet facilities and potable water...

2 Dead In Brong Ahafo Cholera Outbreak

TWO PERSONS have been confirmed dead from fresh cholera outbreak in the Asutifi South District of the Brong-Ahafo Region.

This adds to the list of over 7,000 cholera cases recorded and over 55 deaths recorded so far across the country.

DAILY GUIDE had gathered that the deceased, Akwamuhene, 65, and Agyemang, 35, all from the same house at Wromso, a mining community near Hwidiem, died on Sunday.

Gov?t requests oral vaccines from WHO against Cholera

Government has initiated discussions with the World Health Organisation for the introduction of vaccines to bring the outbreak of the cholera disease in the country under control.

Health facilities are currently struggling to contain the outbreak of the epidemic which has so far claimed 92 lives from over 10,000 reported cases in just three months. The disease has now spread to 52 districts across seven regions of the country, excluding the three northern regions- Northern, Upper East and Upper West...

Hospital appeals for support to handle cholera cases

The Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH) has appealed to the Central Regional Coordinating Council (CRCC) to support it with some medical supplies to enable it treat the increasing number of cholera patients.

Since the outbreak of the disease in the Region the Hospital, which is a referral Centre, has recorded 81 cases with 2 brought in dead August 26 and September 4...

Central Region records 20 cholera deaths

Twenty people have died since cholera broke out in the Central Region in July, Dr. Kwaku Anin KariKari, the Central Regional Deputy Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), has said.

Between Monday, July 21, when the first suspected case was reported at Kasoa in the Awutu Senya East, the disease had spread to 10 more districts with 783 cases in the Region as of September 2.

ACCRA (Reuters) - Cholera has killed at least 67 people in Ghana since June and infected more than 5,000 others in an outbreak that highlights the health and sanitation challenges facing one of Africa's fastest-growing economies.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) said the outbreak was centered on impoverished communities in urban areas in the south that lack adequate toilets, though there were also a few cases in rural parts of the north of the West African state.

Cholera kills 12 in Cape Coast

Twelve persons including a medical doctor and three student nurses have died from cholera in Cape Coast, the Central Regional capital.

A total of 922 cholera cases have been reported in various health facilities in the metropolis since the disease broke out in the region a few weeks ago.
Some reported sick with diarrhea and vomiting after eating ?kenkey? and ?waakye? while others got infected by drinking sachet water.

Govt declares war on cholera as 128 die

The government has declared war on cholera to stop its rapid spread across the country. The war entails using a 'Sword and Shield' strategy, with the sword representing the targets or communities affected and the shield showing the responses to fight the outbreak.

As of September 14, eight out of the country's 10 regions had reported a total of 16,527 cases of cholera and recorded 128 deaths with a case fatality ratio of 0.8 per cent, Dr Emmanuel K. Dzotsi, Public Health Specialist of the Ghana Health Service, told the meeting.

He said cholera was becoming endemic, looking at the trend of outbreaks, and that intervals had shortened to less than a year.

AMA begins crackdown on unhygienic food joints to curb cholera outbreak

The AMA has begun a crackdown on chop bar and restaurant operators whose activities pose health risk to consumers.

These are part of measures to curb the cholera outbreak in the Accra Metropolis.

The move is part of a crackdown on unhygienic restaurants, eateries and chop bars in the capital in the wake of a cholera epidemic that has left more than 130 people dead.

Cholera cases increase in Western Region

He said so far 12O cases have been recorded in nine districts with one death and warned residents to ensure personal hygiene and maintain proper sanitary conditions to avoid the infection.

THE MEDICAL officer in- charge of the Tema Polyclinic, Dr Sally Quartey, has stated that a total of 283 cholera cases with three deaths have been recorded so far at the health facility.

According to her, the polyclinic recorded its first case in July and within six weeks, the number shot up to 74 but had reduced to 32 as at last week, adding that a total of 283 cases with three deaths had been seen at the facility.

Two people have died of cholera at Bechem in the Tano South District in the Brong-Ahafo Region, Margaret Aboligu, Acting District Director of Health Services, has confirmed to DAILY GUIDE.

Twenty-eight cases of cholera have also been recorded making the district a cholera epidemic zone.

Mrs Aboligu, speaking to the paper, noted that the situation is currently under control since all the patients have been treated and discharged.

She hinted that for the past five days, the district has not recorded fresh cases due to the successful public education campaign they have embarked upon.

Cholera epidemic: 22,000 cases recorded, 170 dead

The festering cholera epidemic has now affected more than 22,000 people in all the ten regions of Ghana.

At least 170 of those affected have died in different parts of the country.

Public health officials at the Ghana Health Service have described the epidemic as the worst ever in more than three decades.

Cholera death toll now 204

Two hundred-and-four persons have died cholera disease across the country.

This number reflects an increase in the previous 190 deaths recorded since the cholera epidemic started in April 2014, indicating that the disease is far from receding as the government battles to stem it with the introduction of the National Sanitation Day which was observed on Saturday.

Also 1,026 new cases were reported as of October 26, 2014 with the number of affected districts increasing from 114 to 121 districts in all regions of the country within a period of two weeks.

The outbreak in the Northern Region has spread to two new districts, Bole and West Gonja, moving to the western part of the region.

The Binduri District in the Upper East Region, which is adjoining Bawku on the Eastern border with the Republic of Togo, has also recorded cases of cholera.

Reported cases of cholera nationwide have also reached 24,648.

The Ashanti Region has so far recorded 203 cholera cases in 27 districts with two deaths, followed by the Brong-Ahafo region recording 586 cases in 15 districts and 21 deaths.

The Central Region has recorded 2, 673 cases in 15 of its districts with 36 deaths. In the Eastern Region 1,723 cases were recorded in 16 districts with six people dying while the Northern Region recorded 27 cases from 4 districts and 2 deaths.

The Volta Region also has 478 cases in seven districts, with eight deaths being recorded. Meanwhile, the Western Region has recorded 356 cases in 10 districts with seven deaths.

The Upper East and West regions had 236 and 30 cases in eight and three districts respectively.

Also, seven people have died in the Upper East Region and one in the Upper West due to cholera.

Greater Accra Region which has the most affected districts, recording 18,336 cases and 114 deaths in 16 districts...
