Situation Report on Cholera Outbreak in Ghana
As of 2 November 2014 (Week 4 )
I. Highlights The cholera outbreak that affected Ghana since early June is still on.
The epidemic has affected 123 of the 216 districts in all 10 regions.
A cumulative total of 26,286 cases with 211 deaths, a case fatality rate (CFR) of 0.8% have been recorded.
Seventy-two percent (72%) of the cases is from Greater Accra region
There has been decrease in the number of cases in the Greater Acra Region

I. Situation Overview
The cholera outbreak that started in June 2014 is still on. As of 02 November 2014 (week 4 ), a total of 26,286 cases with 211 deaths
(case fatality rate of 0.8%) were reported from 123 out of the 216 districts in all the 10 regions of the country (Table 1, Fig. 1a and
1b). Twenty-four (24) districts reported one or more cases during week 4 as compared to 34 districts in week 43 (Fig 2a and Fig 2b).
Greater Accra region contributes 72% of the cases. The outbreak which started in the region in week 24 with 6 cases reported saw an
upsurge in week 29 with 251 cases and started spreading to other regions from that week. Al the 16 districts in the region have been
affected. During the week under review (27 October – 2 November 2014 - week 4 ), a total of 315 cases were reported as compared
to 538, 62 and 538 cases reported in week 43, 42 and 41 respectively in the region. There has been a decline in cases over the last
two weeks (Fig 3). Six of the 16 districts have reported zero cases for two consecutive weeks. The potential for spread of cholera is
high considering the continuous existence of the following risk factors: Inadequate supply of
safe water; poor food and personal hygiene; street vending of water and food; poor liquid and solid waste disposal; and urban slums.
