Eight people have died in the Brong Ahafo region following an outbreak of Pneumococcal meningitis in the area.

Confirming the news to Accra-based Starr FM, District health director for Tain, Dr. Michael Rockson Adjei said 30 people have so far been hospitalized after being infected with the deadly pneumococcal meningitis.

He added that the affected are responding to treatment...

Health Ministry confirms outbreak of Meningitis, Yellow Fever in B/A

The Ministry of Health has confirmed an outbreak of Meningitis and Yellow Fever in some parts of the country.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Health indicated that these diseases are predominantly prevalent in the Tain and West Gonja districts in the Brong Ahafo Region and Northern regions respectively...

...Earlier reports suggested that eight people had been confirmed dead in the Brong Ahafo region, following an outbreak of Meningitis in the region but the Ministry in a statement debunked these reports insisting ?30 suspected cases with 7 deaths had so far been recorded.?

It further pointed out that a ?total of twelve (12) cases of yellow fever have been reported and three (3) have died as a result since the end of 2015.?...

Meningitis death toll now 15

The latest location to be hit by the deadly pneumococcal meningitis is Bole in the Northern Region where 5 persons have been reported dead out of 12 cases.

Prior to this, nine other persons had been reported dead in the Brong Ahafo region while the Ashanti region had lost one person due to the infection, which causes swelling of the protective tissue around the brain...

Meningitis declared an epidemic in Bole

The Bole District in the Northern Region has declared the meningitis situation in the District as an epidemic.

The District has recorded 16 suspected cases, nine of which were confirmed and four dead.

Six patients out of the nine confirmed cases are alive and responding to treatment.

Laboratory investigations were, however, not completed for three other suspected cases...

The Pneumococcal Meningitis disease which has so far killed nine people in Tain, Wenchi and Bruohan in the Brong Ahafo Region, has spread to Techiman, in the same region, killing 6 people there.

Health authorities in the region, confirmed this in an interview.

The Municipal Health Director for Techiman, Dr. Damien Punguyire, in an interview, confirmed there have been 18 cases of the cases with six deaths in Techiman North and South...

Thirty-Eight cases of meningitis have so far been recorded in the Brong Ahafo Region with eleven deaths.

Most of the cases were recorded in the Tain District; 28 cases came from the Brohani community in the Nsawkaw sub-district.

The Ghana Health Service says it has so far recorded 32 deaths and 92 reported cases of Pneumococcal meningitis in three regions.

Two people have died from Pneumococcal Meningitis in the Offinso Municipality in the Ashanti Region, weeks after it was first reported in the Brong Ahafo Region, according to the Ministry of Health

The Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Victor Bampoe, told Accra-based Citi FM that the Ministry was investigating to determine whether the deaths are related to the outbreak in the Brong Ahafo Region.

?There were four cases in Offinso and two have died, ? he said, adding that ?all the districts have been put on alert and they are trying to make sure if it is part of the outbreak, then they are going into the communities to find more cases.?...

Parliament?s Health Committee is proposing that the Health Ministry must seek assistance from the World Health Organization (WHO) in tackling the outbreak of the deadly Pneumococcal Meningitis in Ghana.

The chairman of the committee, Joseph Yieleh Chireh said urgent steps need to be taken to contain the disease in order to prevent fear and panic.

?If from the Brong Ahafo Region, it moves to the Northern Region and now to the Ashanti Region, there must be something that is alarming about it so the best thing is to alert the World Health Organization about this situation and seek help as to how effectively we can contain this disease,? he said in an interview with Accra-based Joy FM.

The outbreak of the disease began in December 2015 in the Tain District of the Brong Ahafo Region which later spread to Wenchi, Techiman, Bruohan, Kintampo, and Sene districts...

Seven suspected cases of meningitis have been recorded in the Volta Region, Dr Yaw Ofori-Yeboah, Deputy Director, Public Health of the Volta Regional Health Directorate has said.

Speaking to Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Tuesday, Dr. Ofori-Yeboah said the cases were from Sogakope, Keta, Ketu-North, Krachi-West and Nkwanta South.

He was however quick to add that results from the Sogakope case was negative...

Ghana is seeking assistance from the World Health Organization (WHO) to combat the outbreak of meningitis which has killed 38 people in some areas of the country.

The WHO has provided a number of laboratory equipment including test kits for the diagnosis of meningitis and the ministry of health is expected to receive more consignments from the WHO Africa Regional head office in the coming days.

Meningitis Deaths Hit 6 In Ashanti

SIX PEOPLE have died from the deadly meningococcal meningitis in the Ashanti Region since the outbreak of the infectious disease in the country at the close of last year.

The Ashanti Regional Health Directorate said the figure is among 17 suspected cases reported across 10 districts of the region, with nine confirmed as meningococcal meningitis and streptococcal pneumonia (also known as pneumococcal meningitis).

Meningitis cases reduce in Bole ? Health director

The Bole District Health Directorate says the number of cases of the deadly of pneumococcal meningitis disease, have reduced drastically in the area.

According to them, they have not recorded any case since January 31, 2016.

The Bole District since the beginning of the year, recorded 23 suspected cases of different strain of meningitis out of which 12 tested positive while six persons lost their lives.

The Bole District Health Director, Bumawura Ewutomah Mahama, told the Minister of Health, Alex Segbefia, who paid a visit to some areas affected by the disease, that the reduction is as a result of an intensive education drive...

The Ada East District Hospital has recorded one death from meningitis after diagnosing two suspected cases.

Dr. Philip Narh, Medical Superintendent of the Hospital confirming this to the Ghana News Agency at Ada in the Greater Accra Region, said when the test was conducted on the two suspected persons, one proved positive to the meningitis bacteria while the other was negative.

Dr. Narh said although the examination done immediately revealed the disease, they could not tell which type of meningitis it was because the facility does not have the equipment to carry out further test and the sample taken, had to be sent to a reference point...

Health Minister Alex Segbefia has confirmed to Parliament that 85 people have died through various strains of meningitis, and the recent incidence has stricken 456 people nationwide.

The Brong Ahafo Region has been the hardest hit part of the country, and the disease is raging in various forms: pneumococcal, cerebrospinal and meningococcal.

According to the Minister, the Ministry has intervened with a number of measures, including deploying a team to affected districts in the Brong Ahafo and Northern Regions with funds, antibiotics and technical support.

?Mr Speaker, this week together with the WHO Country representatives, I visited the Brong Ahafo and Northern Regions to assess the situation, provide more funds and 7,500 vials of antibiotics to health workers,? he told Parliament on Thursday...
