[h=3]Abstract[/h] The emergence of highly pathogenic influenza H5N1 virus is unprecedented in the virological era (clinical digest June 27). It is sobering to note that in 1968, when the most recent influenza pandemic occurred, the virus emerged in China, a country that at the time had a population of 790 million, 5.2 million pigs and 12.3 million chickens.
