Measles on the rise in Greece

The danger of measles spreading in Greece is real, the Health Ministry said Friday, pointing to a recent spike in infections in the last four months.

It said that some 100 cases of measles have been reported since June, a significant rise given that, before this period, the rate stood at roughly one infection per year.

A similar spike in measles cases has also been reported in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Romania....

The number of measles cases continues to rise in Greece, with health experts calling for full vaccination for both children and adults.

As of Thursday afternoon, 166 cases of measles were reported to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) in southern Greece; mainly in Attica and the Peloponnese. Authorities say the phenomenon can be extended to other geographical areas in the coming weeks.

Seventy five percent of the cases were of children from the Roma communities; the remaining twenty five percent were non-Roma adults, between the ages of 25-44, including doctors and other health professionals who had not been adequately vaccinated.

Many of the victims, are employees of the National Health System (ESY), as well. According to the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees, a doctor, two nurses and two staff members of Thriasio Hospital in Attica have also been affected...

The rise in the number of measles cases in Greece has forced the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (KEELPNO) to issue a warning.

The center says that since May, when the first cases of the epidemic appeared, there have been 524 cases recorded through Thursday.

The majority of measles cases have been recorded in Attica and the Peloponnese, and mainly among Roma children who have not been vaccinated...

Measles cases on the increase

The measles epidemic that started in Greece over six months ago is showing no sign of abating, with the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (KEELPNO) reporting 80 cases last week alone, bringing the total between May and November to 604.

Moreover, November was the month with the highest number of reported cases (236). Most cases so far have been recorded in southern Greece...

Roma at high risk of measles due to low vacination rates

More than 700 cases of measles have been registered at hospitals across the country, mainly in Attica, since May this year, according to the latest data released by health authorities.

Over half of the people who contracted the virus needed hospital treatment. Tellingly, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said in its monthly report that 450 cases of measles were registered in October, of which 167 were in Greece...

ATHENS, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Greece is facing a measles epidemic this year with the number of reported cases tripling within two months, according to the national centre for the control and prevention of diseases (Keelpno) on Friday.

In late October, the first casualty of the disease outbreak was a vaccinated Roma baby of 11 months. A total of 326 confirmed cases have been reported from the start of the year.

By Dec. 28, Keelpno confirmed 922 measles cases across the country...
