Six new cases of the H1N1 influenza virus were detected in Greece over the past 48 hours, taking the country?s total to 162.

The new cases are four British nationals who recently arrived in Greece, a 7-year-old Greek-Australian girl and a 30-year-old Greek woman believed to have come into contact with an infected person.

H1N1 Cases Soar to 222 in Greece


Six new H1N1 infections were confirmed Friday in Greece, raising the total number of the swine flu cases to 222. Of them, 102 have been fully cured.

The increasing number of infections made experts estimate that 33% of the population will probably go down with the swine flu. Greek Health Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos advised calmness and vigilance, stressing that Greece can address a pandemic.

Symptoms remain mild, while all health agencies are on standby to address the new infections, said the Health Ministry, underlining that everything is under control. Avramopoulos said that there is a sufficient stockpiles of anti-virus medicines, while some 8 million vaccines have been ordered.

The strategic action plan includes the vaccination of four million Greek in October and February.

In Greece, said Avramopoulos, 78% of the infections has to do with travelers, however, there has been a rise in the infections recorded. Fearing that the increase rate might stand at 54% in autumn, the Greek Health Minister did not rule out deaths.

ATHENS, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Greek Health Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos formally announced here on Tuesday that nurseries and kindergartens in the country will open for the new school year as scheduled, as the entire state mechanism is prepared and on constant alert for the new A/H1N1 flu.

Avramopoulos said that the private pre-schools will open on Aug.17 and public ones on Sept. 1, while the final decision on primary and secondary schools will be taken following an overall assessment of the situation.

"The government is unceasingly monitoring the problem and immediately resolving any matters that arise," Avramopoulos said.

The health minister said all case scenarios were being examined, while stressing that "we will not allow our society to slip into a state of panic." He noted that the government, under instructions of Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis, was operating in an organized and coordinated way.

Greek government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros said that "we are monitoring the situation," and emphasized that the state officials' vigilance and close monitoring of the situation, as well as the collection of all relevant facts and the state's preparedness, guaranteed that the country will respond to the best possible degree.

According to the Greek Health Ministry, so far in Greece 1,002 A/H1N1 flu cases have been confirmed, of which 95 percent have recovered completely "and are back in their homes, in excellent health."

Avramopoulos also said that the dispensation of antiviral medicines has been deregulated, while the primary healthcare network for the new flu was being expanded.

A 28-year-old man was admitted to the intensive-care unit of the Navy Hospital in Athens yesterday suffering from breathing problems caused by swine flu.

The unnamed man had been on vacation on an unspecified Aegean island when he began to feel unwell. Doctors said that he was in a critical condition.

Meanwhile, a 29-year-old German woman who is a member of the crew of the Aida Vita cruise ship was in stable condition at the Metropolitan Hospital in Athens after also contracting the disease.

Almost 1,500 people in Greece have contracted the virus.
