Government of Guatemala announces prolonged curfew for Covid-19

Guatemala, May 14 (Prensa Latina) Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei announced today a prolonged curfew until Monday, May 18, after a cumulative thousand 1,518 positive cases of Covid-19, of them, 176 in the last 24 hours.

Giammattei argued that it was necessary to take the drastic measure due to the exponential rise in infections compared to the previous week, since the growth was 194 percent at the end of the ninth epidemiological week.

"We almost tripled the number of cases," he said, justifying the decision to totally restrict locomotion at the national level from tomorrow to Monday, May 18, in order to privilege the health of the population.

He detailed within the exceptions, the transportation of fuel, water, medicine and propane gas, telephone and internet services, and people with chronic diseases who must be mobilized for specialized treatment, among other authorized sectors to maintain the vitality of the country.

In the case of neighborhood stores or grocery stores, these may open from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and people must move on foot, since the mobilization of two or four-wheeled vehicles will not be allowed, he said.

Starting next Monday, the 10-hour curfew in force will change from 5:00 pm to 5:00 am the next day, two more hours, without forgetting the use of masks (mandatory for several weeks), physical distancing and the call not to leave home.

The cantonal and municipal markets will open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 am to 1:00 pm, and supermarkets and convenience stores will open from 9:00 to 4:00 pm, he said.
