Guatemala Registers Coronavirus Outbreak in a Textile Maquila
Of those tests sent to the laboratory, "there are 18 positives," said the report from the health center.

A textile maquila located on the southern outskirts of Guatemala City registered an outbreak of coronavirus contagions of more than 20 people and another 35 pending to know their results, according to information released this Monday by the Human Rights Ombudsman.

Due to the probable outbreak of infections, the ombudsman, Jord?n Rodas, recommended that the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance “quarantine more than 900 workers at the textile factory”, located in the metropolitan municipality of San Miguel Petapa, about 15 kilometers from the center of the Guatemalan capital.

The Office of the Public Prosecutor published a letter from the San Miguel Petapa health center, addressed to the Health Area of Guatemala Sur, from the Government's health portfolio, in order to notify the series of infections and clinical evaluations to people in the social networks. factory last week.

In the letter, the health center announced to the health authorities that on May 12 six people tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 at the KP Textil factory, so a group was organized the following two days doctor and nurse to evaluate 208 people, although they only performed 32 swabs.

Of those tests sent to the laboratory, "there are 18 positives," said the report from the health center, to which were added the first six cases; in addition to “66 suspicious people”.

The health center recorded in the letter that the owners of the maquila had provided "little collaboration to carry out the actions of health personnel in relation to the evaluation of patients", because "lack of time affects the production ”, as they argued.

In addition, the medical team found that the owners of the maquila had "classified from the time of entry the people they considered symptomatic or suspicious to be evaluated and the rest of the people were sent back home," so the Health personnel failed to observe the workers in their daily activities.

The mayor of San Miguel Petapa, Mynor Morales, pronounced this Monday in a radio interview that he was concerned about the situation, because "the owners of the maquila did not want to provide the corresponding collaboration to make swabs for different people."

Due to the generation of the viral outbreak, Morales declared the municipality "in emergency", in order to "take the corresponding measures and contain the spread of the virus."

Guatemala reached a total of 1,912 positive cases of COVID-19 this Sunday, of which 35 have died, 138 have recovered, two have died of causes beyond infection and 1,737 are still active.

Fewer than a hundred municipalities in Guatemala are free of coronaviruses
By Newsroom Infobae
June 1, 2020

Guatemala, Jun 1 (EFE) .- The coronavirus has reached at least 244 municipalities in Guatemala, out of a total of 340 that make up the country, so that 96 mayorships still persist without accounting for positive cases of COVID-19, according to data collected. by various sources this Monday.
With five villages that registered cases in the last hours, Guatemala reduced the official registry of 101 coronavirus-free municipalities released last Thursday by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance.
In the last 24 hours, municipal leaders and health institutions have confirmed to local media the first cases of COVID-19 in San Jos? Otenam and Esquipulas Palo Gordo, in the department of San Marcos (west); in Panajachel, Solol? (west); in Chisec, Alta Verapaz (north); and in Moyuta, Jutiapa (east).
Asked about the new cases in these five municipalities that had not presented infections, the Director of Communication of the Ministry of Health, Julia Barrera, assured that the epidemiology department of the health entity has not yet transferred an update of data, such as the one released last Thursday.
In the Central American country there is no department where there have been no cases of coronavirus, the first infection of which was registered 80 days ago, on March 13, in a patient recently arrived from a trip through countries in Southern Europe.
It was not until last Thursday that the Ministry of Health returned to report on cases of COVID-19 by municipality, after in early April, when Guatemala was just over 60 cases, it decided to omit the information by location because it was supposedly put in danger to infected people who could retaliate from the community.
The Guatemalan president, Alejandro Giammattei, then accused the media of requesting and publishing sensitive information such as names and addresses of patients, which supposedly put the lives of those infected at risk by causing violent reactions from people living with the virus. .
To date, the Central American country has registered 5,087 confirmed cases, with 108 people included, two more who lost their lives due to causes other than the infection and 735 recovered, leaving a total of 4,242 active cases.
The department with the most infections is Guatemala, with 3,462, followed by San Marcos (west), with 271.

Phase

The route to return to the new normality is written in agreement 146-2020 of the Ministry of Health and for the reopening to begin, some indicators of the coronavirus in Guatemala must be met.

Edwin Asturias, director of the Presidential Commission against covid-19 (Coprecovid) explained that there are still several days before this happens.

"We are in the acceleration phase of the pandemic. We are not even close to that phase 0. We are in the escalation, but the escalation does not only involve cases, but also the ability to care for the disease. When we have flattened the wave, we will be able to work on those indicators, "said Asturias.
