Flu outbreaks challenge local care institutions

GUELPH ? St. Joseph?s Health Centre is among six local long-term care facilities reeling from flu outbreaks now gripping the region in a hard embrace.
Chief executive Marianne Walker appealed to the visiting public to join in precautionary measures, particularly those who may be carriers of the opportunistic virus.
?If you?re unwell, the message is please stay home,? she said Friday. ?We take it very seriously every time there?s an outbreak.?
?Our issue right now is it?s in the community.? Thus, Walker?s stay-home advisory.
Her sprawling facility?s struggling with two outbreaks. The first began Dec. 30, in its 91-bed hospital unit, infecting 10 patients and four staff. But there have been no new cases in recent days, so she?s hopeful that outbreak can be declared over on or about Monday.
But there was a separate outbreak Tuesday in its long-term care facility, infecting nine residents but no staff...
