97 people suffering from diarrhoea in Sabarkantha

Banaskantha, May 23 (PTI) As many as 97 people have reported to various hospitals in Sabarkantha district with complaint of diarrhoea and vomiting in last three days.

With 31 more admitted to hospitals today, the number of those suffering from the disease has reached 97 in Chadrej village, Chief District Health Officer (Sabarkantha) H R Nayak said.

13 cases were recorded by the Bayad Primary Health Centre (PHC) on Thursday, which was 14 on Friday. 39 were reported on Saturday.

To combat the water-borne disease, a campaign on war footing has been initiated in the village. "Besides distributing over 3,000 chlorine tablets as many as 255 are under observation after conducting a house-to-house survey in and around the village.

"Blood samples taken from the patients have confirmed the disease and the situation will be under control within a couple of days, Nayak said.

RAJKOT: A man died of severe diarrhoea while 14 new cases of the disease were reported on Saturday from the city, parts of which have reported outbreak of waterborne diseases including cholera since last week.

According to health officials of Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC), Rana Godhani, 65, died at Civil Hospital after he was admitted with acute diarrhoea. Sources in RMC attributed the rise in the disease to lack of sanitation drive.

"Though RMC officials are carrying out water purification drive on war footing by distributing chlorine tablets, the situation is yet not under control.

Four die due to consumption of contaminated water in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: Four persons including a six-year-old boy, have died due to diarrhoea and vomiting while 44 others affected, with similar symptoms, have been hospitalised in Viramgam taluk of the district today, district officials said.

The cases have been reported in last couple of days from the Ghoda village of Viramgam where contamination of drinking water seems to be the major cause of the disease, they said.

"Four persons who includes three adults and a six-year-old boy have died after suffering from severe diarrhoea," Viramgam mamlatdar DR Patel, told PTI.

"As many as 44 people who had complained of similar symptoms are being treated at village primary health centre and emergency dispensary which had been opened in the primary school building there," he said.

"A team of doctors are attending to people complaining of nausea and vomiting. Tankers of clean drinking water has been sent" to the village," Patel added.

According to Patel, who is camping in the village, the primary reason for such cases was consumption of contaminated drinking water from the village well or pond.

"Due to rains in past few days, cow-dung, mud and other contaminants seems to have got mixed with the drinking water sources. We have taken samples and are testing the water," he added. Meanwhile, health department team members are doing door-to-door surveys to find if more people are suffering by similar diseases.

An 108 ambulance has been stationed at the village in case there was an emergency, Patel said.

"Some people whose condition got worse have been referred to the Gandhi Hospital in Viramgam town," he said, adding that they are taking all possible precautions to prevent spread of the diseases.

Gastro outbreak eases

VADODARA: The gastroenteritis outbreak in Tulsiwadi area of the city eased with the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) claiming that only six fresh cases were reported in the locality. VMC health teams camped in the city since Thursday night to control the situation.

The health teams went from door to door in Roshannagar, Sanjaynagar, Ganeshnagar and Jai Ambe Nagar residential localities in the city. A survey of 1,500 houses was also conducted by the civic body that distributed chlorine tablets, oral rehydration solutions and pamphlets on awareness in the affected areas.

What has thrown a surprise, however, is the fact that the civic body tested 178 water samples in the locality and none of them was found to be contaminated. A major effort is now being made to identify the source of the diarrhoea and vomiting outbreak in Tulsiwadi.

A meeting of the health department and other officials concerned was called by the top brass of the VMC on Friday. The officials have been instructed to concentrate on sanitation and take care of any health situation in the city.
