Civic officials say fresh water can?t flow in the sewer line and people?s issues will take time to be addressed. The bridge is likely to be opened on October 2
The stage is set for inauguration of the renovated historic Dandi Bridge on October 2, but the basic issue of nearby residents defecating on and under it, using the surrounding area as a dump yard and the sewer line carrying stinking pollutants persist. A high court directive made the municipal corporation to redo the bridge that Mahatma Gandhi used to cross the channel below it as he embarked on Salt March to Dandi in 1930.
Two years and about Rs 2 crore later, the bridge is redone but the conditions around it remain almost the same. Officials have barricaded the bridge by installing an iron grille on either side and locking it to prevent people from nearby slums to approach and defecate on it, but that is no solution, local residents points out. AMC has failed to address the issue of filth and stench as it had not been able to tackle the basic problem: lack of functional toilet blocks for around 500 persons in the nearby slums.
