Three die of mysterious disease in Gujarat's Tapi

The death of three persons from a mysterious disease at Waghpani village in Vyara taluka of Tapi district kept health officials on tenterhooks on Monday. Preliminary investigations revealed that the three persons had high fever and were vomiting blood.

Though the deaths occurred between July 31 and August 6, the Tapi district administration sent a team of doctors to the village on Monday. Health officials in Gandhinagar, however, said that there was nothing to worry.

Those died have been identified as Chaggan Gamit, 52, Kanta Gamit, 61, and Sunita Gamit, 25. The three had shown common symptoms of high fever and vomiting, which made the locals suspect that their village had been hit by some mysterious disease. So they informed the district administration.

Villagers said the three had common symptoms. "The victims might have some physical problem, but how can they have common symptoms? This clearly indicates that they were infected with some disease. We have asked health officials to spray disinfectant in the village," said Nagindas Gamit, aresident of Waghpani.

Health officials in Gandhinagar said that there was nothing serious. "Our rapid response team has visited the village. The causes of the death for all three persons are different. One person died due to lever cirrhosis, one due to TB, and the third patient died because of diarrhoea and vomiting. There is nothing to worry or panic about. Just because all three deaths occurred in a week, people got scared," said state additional director (health) Dr PV Dave.

Mysterious disease strikes six more in Waghpani

Six other villagers of Waghpani are reported to be suffering from the same symptoms which the three deceased in the village had exhibited before their death.

The six have been identified and admitted to the government hospital. Following the mysterious death in Waghpani, district health officials continued to check villagers on Tuesday as well.

During the check up, officials found six people who had symptoms similar to the now deceased villagers.

They were quarantined and rushed to government hospital at Bedkuva village near Waghpani. All six are being given treatment under strict supervision by a team of doctors.

I wonder if there is any connection to the leptospirosis outbreak in the region;

SURAT: Leptospirosis bacterial infection has changed its pattern of attack on a human body. Earlier, the pathogenic organisms used to attack a person's liver and kidneys, but now their focus is lungs, doctors said.

Till now this year 174 cases of leptospirosis were reported in south Gujarat of whom 28 persons have died. Besides, the disease this time is mostly concentrated around Surat and Tapi districts as against Valsad and Navsari in the past.
