Hamburg strain

out of 77 available viruses from Spain (NA and M only),
26+7 are probably the Hamburg strain (could be derived from LaGloria),
17 the Cancun-New York strain.

8 without mutation, could be original Mex, Cancun-Newberry or New Jersey strain or others
same for 13 with 2 special Spain mutations

Yea, one is clearly related to New Jersey/01.

The S286G change in many of the NA segments is a seasonal H1N1 marker, and is showing up in the latest isolates. Recent recombination?

Explain to me one more time what distinguishes your "Hamburg". I thought it included unique changes within segments 1, 3 and 5 only.

Re: Hamburg strain

two different Cancun strains,
one was first introduced at St.Francis school, New York
the other at Newberry Academy, South Carolina

both end of April from Cancun-travelers,
quite different strains

In the link above I called it "airplane-strain"
(not knowing about Newberry at that time...)

Although, strictly viewed it's still airplane, since I included
Narita,Beijing,Paris,Arizona/01 here, which only share 2 resp.1 of the Newberry mutations
(the major one: G546A(1))

Alright, and many thanks! I think I'm following your convention. So, St. Francis would be New York/06 like, and Newberry would be SC/09 like?

And if that is the case then the Israel/276 reassortment ocurred in a person that was dually infected with NY and SC like viruses at exactly the same time?

Am I close? Or is there something else?

SC/09 is derived from Mexico/4115. What Mexican strain is NY/06 derived from?

Re: Hamburg strain

yes to all
all ****** are derived from 4115-3mutations

Got it.

So, from where did Israel/276 get the K526R change in PB2? I don't see that in either NY/06 (St. Francis) or SC/09 (Newberry). What am I missing? This is not a triple reassortant is it?

Re: Hamburg strain

coincidence ?
developed independently ?
rare variant, evolved early ?
