Teenaged girl succumbs to swine flu



Chandigarh, Oct 31 A 14-year-old girl, studying in a school in Karnal in Haryana, succumbed to the dreaded swine flu at PGIMER here today, a health official said.

The girl, admitted to the hospital yesterday in a serious condition, had tested positive for H1NI, said H C Gera, Nodal officer for swine flu cases.

The girl was a hosteller, he said adding all her family members had been quarantined.

Earlier, a teenaged girl, hailing from Ambala, had died of the infection in a hospital here.

Haryana has till Tuesday reported 657 positive cases of influenza A (H1N1) virus with a majority of them (466) in Gurgaon city, adjoining the national capital. Eight people have died of the disease.

Haryana Health Minister Geeta Bhukkal Tuesday urged the people of the state not to panic and said that the state health department is fully alert and well-equipped to tackle any kind of emergency.

In Haryana, 1108 suspected cases of swine flu were reported, of which 657 tested positive.

"563 positive cases were quarantined at their homes and their treatment has been completed. Around 37 positive cases are still on home quarantine," Bhukkal said.

Of the eight deaths due to the disease, two were in Faridabad district and one each in Panchkula and Gurgaon districts.

"Complete vigil on patients reporting with flu-like symptoms is being maintained by our medical staff. The people are being made aware of preventive measures of this disease. District units have been geared up for quick response in identification, testing, isolation and treatment of positive patients," Bhukkal said.

Adequate supply of medicines and other equipment has been ensured in all districts. Around 6,670 triple layer masks, 555 N95 masks, 91,500 Tamiflu capsules and 1,734 Tamiflu bottles of syrup have been issued to the district units, she added.

?So far, we have screened nearly 2,270 suspected cases, of which 1,191 tested positive. Besides, we have also tested 2,351 people who came in direct contact with positive patients,? said a state health department spokesman.



?Gurgaon has seen maximum number of cases (557), followed by Bhiwani and Sonepat districts with 177 and 127 cases respectively. 11 deaths, due to swine flu, have been reported in Haryana till now.?


According to official records, 562 cases, that is 47.2 per cent of total cases, have been reported positive from private laboratories in Haryana. All positive cases were successfully treated, except 213 patients who were still on home quarantine.

With the cold conditions intensifying, swine flu cases have been on the rise in Haryana along with the rest of the country. While the virus has claimed 17 lives in the state till now, there are as many as 1,393 confirmed cases of the H1N1 influenza here ? the maximum in Gurgaon and surrounding areas ? and 2,758 patients have been tested and screened till now.



Health department officials, however, say there is no reason to panic. ?Things are under control. The mortality rate in other parts of the country has been much more. The department has enough stocks of medicines and is fully geared up to meet any eventuality,? said Dr Narbir Singh, Director, General Health Services (DGHS). According to sources, the department has purchased as many as 10,000 masks to be given to the people at a nominal rate.



The disease seems to have spread its tentacles mostly in the National Capital Region. Of the 1,393 positive patients, approximately half (624) belong to Gurgaon district alone, followed by 183 to Bhiwani, 126 to Faridabad and 143 to Sonepat. As many as 68 cases have been reported from Panchkula, 38 from Ambala, 50 from Yamunanagar, 46 from Panipat and 16 from Sirsa districts. Hisar and Karnal have reported 13 cases each, while Rohtak district has eight cases, Jind has four, Kaithal has three and Kurukshetra and Jhajjar districts has one case each. The last reported death was of a woman in Ambala on Wednesday. Of the total positive cases, 562 have been reported from private laboratories, according to sources. Dr Narbir Singh said Chemoprophylaxis had been done in 2,351 cases (contacts of patients) to prevent the spread of the virus.



Of the 17 deaths due to swine flu since August, one each was reported in Gurgaon, Jhajjar, Panchkula and Sirsa districts and two each in Karnal, Panipat, Faridabad and Ambala districts.



?The state government has been carrying out an awareness campaign for the last few months. As a preventive measure, people have been advised to stay away from public places if they have fever or cough and cold,? said Haryana Health Secretary Navraj Sandhu.

Thirtyfive-year-old Mithu Singh of Gadrana village in this district was brought to local general hospital yesterday with symptoms of H1N1- high fever, breathlessness and chest pain.

?We have sent samples for testing to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD),? said Dr Viresh Bhushan, nodal officer.

Gurnam Singh from the village had died of swine flu on December 2 and the health authorities had claimed to have conducted a door-to-door survey for more infected persons.

Gurnam Singh was also a land labourer like Mithu Singh. Dr Bhushan said the authorities had found 15 cases with symptoms of category A of influenza and another with B category symptoms.

All the patients were doing fine, the doctor claimed. Their condition was being monitored.

Meanwhile, the health authorities are waiting for the report of samples of MBA student Amit Kumar who died at the PGIMS last Thursday.

The health authorities so far have sent samples of 122 persons to the NICD out of which reports in 117 cases have been received and 17 cases found positive.

With another death at PGI on Thursday, the swine flu toll in the city reached 29. Five others, meanwhile, have tested positive for the H1N1 virus. Seema, 32, a resident of Fatehabad in Haryana died at PGI after she tested positive for the deadly virus on Wednesday. She was on ventilator for the last two days.
Among those who tested positive at the PGI lab, three cases, including two children, are Chandigarh residents.

A nine-month-old boy from Kajheri is admitted at GMCH, Sector 32, while an eight-year-old girl from Sector 38 is admitted at the isolation ward in Inscol Hospital.

A doctor from PGI has also tested positive and is admitted at the hospital isolation ward. A resident from Punjab and Himachal are also among those who tested positive.

While the Health department says that the number of patients is likely to further go up as the temperature dips, the month of December alone has seen over 120 positive cases that have been tested at the PGI lab.

By IANSDecember 17th, 2009 GURGAON - A 48-year-old woman died of swine flu in a Gurgaon hospital, officials said Thursday.


Anita Agarwal, a resident of Jeoni Mandi in Agra, was admitted to a hospital in Gurgaon after her condition deteriorated. She died Monday night.

Medical authorities in Agra have alerted private nursing homes and government hospitals to take precautions and have asked them to report every suspected case of swine flu. Health officials visited Agarwal?s residence to examine other family members.

She was cremated in Agra Tuesday.

Swine flu claimed the third life in the district with 24-year-old Pinki of Jaroda village, who was pregnant, dying at the PGI yesterday. The matter came to light in the afternoon

Earlier 29-year-old Rinku of Gobind Puri and Pardeep (16) of Bhaidthal village had died due to swine flu.

A report from Fatehabad said 11 students of a nursing college in Ratia in this district have been shifted to the community health centre (CHC) with symptoms of fever, cough and cold. ?They are showing symptoms categorized under ?A? type of influenza and have been admitted to the isolation ward of the centre,? said Dr VK Jain, Senior Medical Officer.Eight of these girls belong to Rajasthan, two from neighbouring villages and one is from Sonepat.

They were housed in two dormitories.

?The girl student from Sonepat had come from her home some time back and doctors suspect that she may have infected the other girls in the hostel,? Dr Jain said. ?These girls do not need tests for swine flu at this stage,but we are keeping a watch on their condition,? Dr Jain said. The girls are being administered antibiotics , he added.

Chandigarh, Dec 18 (PTI) The H1N1 virus claimed lives of three persons, including two from Punjab, in the city today taking the death toll due to swine flu in the region to 32.

Harpal Singh from Ludhiana, Gurnam Singh from Bathinda and Vickey from Kaithal died in PGIMER here due to swine flu, city's swine flu nodal officer Dr G C Bansal said here.

He said that three positive cases, one each from Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh were hospitalised today taking the number of such cases to 213.

Among the positive cases admitted to hospitals was a doctor of local government hospital, a resident of Mohali.

He said that with fall in minimum temperature, the trend of positive Swine flu cases has "increased", but the situation is not alarming.

One swine flu death in Chandigarh, five new cases

Chandigarh, Dec 18 (IANS) One more swine flu death was reported Friday in this city taking the toll due to influenza A (H1N1) to 29, a health department official said Friday.
“The deceased was identified as a 32-year-old resident of Fatehabad town in Haryana. She was brought in a serious condition. We have informed the health authorities in Haryana and told them to quarantine people who came in contact with the deceased,” said an official said.

Meanwhile, five more positive cases were reported Friday.

“Three of the patients, two children and a doctor, are residents of Chandigarh while two others are from Punjab and Himachal Pradesh,” said the official.

Till now, over 600 suspected cases of swine flu have been reported of which 240 have tested positive.

The Indian Army’s Western Command Hospital here has reported 55 positive swine flu cases among defence personnel and their family members.

“So far 55 positive cases of swine flu have been reported in the Western Command hospital at Chandimandir. Forty-four of them were defence personnel while 11 were family members,” said a defence spokesperson.

“There have been no casualties, but two patients are still admitted here and undergoing treatment,” he said.

Meanwhile, Punjab has reported 120 positive cases and 16 deaths due to the contagious virus.

Deepak Bhatia, Punjab nodal officer of swine flu, told IANS: “People are becoming more prone to infection with a dip in mercury. But we are fully prepared to tackle any kind of emergency situation and have ample stocks of medicines.”

Kurukshetra, Dec 26 (PTI) A 40-year-old man succumbed to the swine flu in a village in Kurukshetra district of Haryana, a health official said here today.

Dilbag Singh, a resident of Balahi village, died of the illness at a hospital in Mohali in Punjab yesterday, he said.

A team of doctors had been despatched to the village to take blood samples of Singh's relatives, the official said.

Farika, a resident of Maheshnagar, Ambala Cantonment, died of suspected swine flu on Saturday. Rajesh Kumar alleged that a private practitioner, Dr Anu Jain, was responsible for the death of his daughter. He said the doctor had given her an injection after which the child?s condition deteriorated. She was then taken to the civil hospital where the doctors declared her dead on arrival. Kumar said his daughter was given medicines for fever, cold and cough but her condition deteriorated. No tests were conducted to confirm swine flu, he alleged.

The first swine flu death of the season has been reported here.

Informed sources said 37-year-old Saroj, resident of Kadarpur village, was admitted to a private hospital in Sushant Lok area.


'He was suffering from viral fever. He died Thursday evening,' a health department official said. He was reportedly suffering from cold and fever since returning from Haridwar last week.


Last year, Gurgaon witnessed three deaths due to swine flu and as many as 1,000 residents tested positive for the flu.

After a resident of Sector 4 tested positive for swine flu, the Administration and health authorities in Panchkula are leaving no stone unturned to prevent the spread of the pandemic. Besides issuing advisory to educational institutions, the Administration has also asked health authorities to form rapid response teams and update its stock of medicines to combat the situation.

A rapid response team comprising a paediatrician, pathologist, physician and lab technician has been formed by the district nodal officer. The team would keep a close watch on schools and colonies for suspected cases of swine flu. Dr Jagmal Singh, nodal officer, said they sent about eight samples to PGI, Chandigarh, on Friday for tests to confirm the H1N1 influenza, but all turned out to be negative.

The advisory, which has been sent to private and government-run clinics, also have instructions on preparing a complete data of patients coming to them with symptoms of cough and cold. The matter has to be reported to the nodal officer.

The Administration has asked schools to earmark morning assemblies for creating awareness among students about the pandemic. Schools have also been asked to get any student suffering from cough and cold thoroughly examined.

A resident of Sector 4, Naresh Bansal (56), employed with the Haryana Tourism had tested positive of the virus on Saturday.

He is currently admitted in Fortis Hospital, Mohali and his condition is stated to be stable. The health authorities had immediately quarantined the patient?s family and is monitoring them closely.

Woman tests positive for swine flu in city
A resident of Jalandhar admitted in PGI has tested positive for swine flu. Meanwhile the results of eight other samples came out to be negative. Nodal officer for swine flu Dr Abha Rana said that the woman from Jalandhar who tested positive was admitted in the PGI on August 20. Information on the same has been sent to the officials concerned of Punjab.

GURGAON: The city recorded its fourth swine flu death after a 32-year-old woman died at the Artemis Hospital on Wednesday. Asha Gupta, a resident of Patel Nagar, had been admitted to the hospital since September 29.

Asha died of multiple organ failure, said a health department official. The swine flu death comes after a gap of one and half months. As many as 83 confirmed cases of swine flu have been reported from the city so far this year. Dengue, meanwhile, too was on the rise in October with 35 to 40 cases being reported on an average each week. According to official figures, the number of dengue cases has gone up to 451. Besides, six deaths have also been reported. Around 59 blood samples are awaiting confirmation at the General Hospital. Most cases are being reported from private hospitals, said sources. Civil surgeon Praveen Kumar Garg said: The prevailing weather conditions are conducive for the breeding of dengue mosquitoes. Anti-larval measures and fogging activities are being carried out at places from where a high number of dengue cases have been reported.

Malaria cases, however, have not shown any significant increase and around 3 cases to 4 cases are coming to hospitals on a daily basis. The number of cases stood at 118 till Wednesday. In comparison, 100 cases of dengue and nearly 150 of malaria were reported in 2009. The number of cases of swine flu cases, meanwhile, has reduced significantly from the 980 confirmed cases reported last year.
