Two Infectious as Dengue Fever Count Rises

Two individuals on the Big Island who have confirmed cases of dengue fever remain infectious, as of Thursday afternoon.

The Hawai?i Department of Health notes that the individuals have onset of illness dates between Jan. 6 and Jan. 8, and are the only two confirmed individuals known to authorities to be currently at an infectious stage of the disease.

Three new cases of dengue were also confirmed within the past day. One of those cases involves a visitor to the island, increasing the total number of visitors infected during the outbreak to 21...

As a precaution, the Waipio Valley Access Road and valley area has been closed to all traffic effective 2:30 p.m. January 13, 2016 and access will be limited to valley residents only. This restricted access will remain until further notice.

As of 1 p.m. today (Jan 19) the Department of Health reported one new confirmed case of Dengue Fever. The total number of confirmed cases since the beginning of the outbreak is 224. These cases include 202 residents and 22 visitors. Due to the time frame of the acquired illness there are no known infectious individuals at the current time...

Thursday?s count of confirmed dengue cases was reported to be 230. DOH officials said Thursday that the three ?potentially infectious? individuals have an onset of illness date between Jan. 11 and Jan. 16...

The state Department of Health tells Maui Now that they have confirmed a case of dengue fever in a resident of Maui that recently traveled to a country where dengue fever is endemic.

Health officials tell Maui Now that there are no other dengue cases related to this case.

?Since October, there have been three imported cases of dengue fever reported on Maui when individuals picked up the illness in another country while traveling,? said Janice Okubo, Public Information Officer for the State Department of Health...

...The Hawaii Department of Health (HDOH) is investigating a cluster of locally-acquired cases of dengue fever on Hawaii Island (the Big Island). Dengue is not endemic to Hawaii. However, it is intermittently imported from endemic areas by infected travelers. This is the first cluster of locally-acquired dengue fever since the 2011 outbreak on Oahu. GOVERNOR&#146;S OFFICE NEWS RELEASE: STATE MOBILIZES TO PREVENT MOSQUITO BORNE ILLNESSES


HONOLULU &#150; Gov. David Ige signed an emergency proclamation Friday, as a preventive measure against mosquito borne illnesses that include dengue fever and Zika. This follows the recent decision by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to open its emergency operations center at Level 1 to prepare for and mitigate the Zika risk.

&#147;There have been no locally acquired Zika cases in the U.S. or Hawai&#145;i, and we&#146;d like to keep it that way. This is about getting in front of the situation across the state. I will be coordinating planning efforts with the Hawai&#145;i Emergency Management Agency, all county mayors and Civil Defense coordinators,&#148; said Gov. Ige.

On Hawai&#145;i Island, dengue fever cases continue to be fewer and farther between. However, the battle is not over and state continues to focus resources to break the cycle of dengue fever infection and transmission.

The emergency proclamation will give the state access to the Major Disaster Fund, the option of waiving certain laws and regulations to expedite the outbreak response if and when needed, as well as pave the way for federal assistance should the state exhaust its resources.
The state previously released the State Health Department from a 5 percent budget restriction ($250,000) to fund costs incurred while responding to the onset of the dengue outbreak.

The state is also releasing the Health Department from another 5 percent restriction ($250,000) to fund eight vector control positions, one entomologist and one communications position.

The dengue fever case count on the Big Island remains at 263 cases on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the Hawai?i Department of Health issued an update to its Risk Areas for Potential Infection map, noting that no changes were made since the prior week.

Despite no new cases of dengue on the island in just over three weeks, two locations remain listed by DOH as areas of ?some risk? of infection: Hookena and Kalaoa...
