OUTBREAK IN SHIMLA AGAIN: 20 others from Sanjauli locality admitted in hospital

Panic has gripped Shimla town with diarrhoea claiming the life of a 12-year-old boy in the Dhingu Baodi locality of Sanjauli. The cause of the spread of diarrhoea is reported to be consumption of contaminated water.

At least 20 more people from the same locality have been admitted in the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMCH) with diarrhoea. In the last two days, 40 such cases have been reported, according to hospital records.

Doctors have reported the condition of the 40 to be stable, though they are under constant surveillance.

?Manoj Kumar, the 12-year-old son of a labourer, was already dead when he reached the hospital,? said Dr Vinod Mehta, Surveillance Officer of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP).

Director, Health Services, Dr Vinod Pathak said: ?We have rushed a team of doctors to the affected area in Sanjauli. A drive has been launched for early detection of diarrhoea cases in the vicinity. Samples of drinking water and that of patients? stool have also been taken for bacterial examination. The exact cause of diarrhoea is yet to be known.?

Mehta added: ?In the last two days, about 40 cases were reported from Dhungu Baodi, Sanjauli and Neri Dhar. People have been alerted and three teams of doctors are doing rounds in the area. The civil dispensary at Sanjauli will now function 24 hours to monitor the situation.?

Re-surfacing of a water borne disease in Shimla within a gap of less than six months has once again raised suspicion on the quality of water being supplied in the town. Nearly 1,500 people had taken ill due to the spread of jaundice in localities on the periphery of Shimla between January and March this year. The reason was contaminated drinking water. Though the samples of water drawn from municipal corporation taps had not shown any contamination, experts had not ruled out mixing of sewerage with drinking water at some point, leading to the outbreak of jaundice.

Shimla:

As the count of patients affected with diarrhoea touched 133 in Shimla on Friday, the state government issued an advisory across the state against consumption of drinking water from natural sources and checking open defecation, especially around water sources. The main reason for diarrhoea outbreak in Dhingu Baodi locality of Sanjauli, which has alone reported over 100 cases in the town, was consumption of contaminated water from natural source. Reports of the Health department suggested the cause of contamination was open defection near the area.

A house to house visit was conducted in 212 houses of the affected locality, who were also sensitized to the needs of using boiled water and taking other preventions. ORS and chlorine tablets were also distributed.

Yesterday there were 51 cases of diarrhea reported of whom only two needed hospitalization.
