Two linked imported cases of dengue fever investigated

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (April 3) investigating two linked imported cases of dengue fever and urged people to guard against the disease.

The first patient is a 33-year-old woman with good past health. She developed fever, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, skin rash and vomiting since March 29. She was admitted to a private hospital on April 1 and she is now in a stable condition.

The second patient is the first patient's 32-year-old husband, who developed similar symptoms since March 29. He was admitted to the same private hospital on April 2 and he is now in a stable condition.

Their blood samples tested positive for dengue NS1 antigen at a private laboratory.

The CHP investigation revealed that they had travelled to Bali, Indonesia between March 20 and 30. Two of their travel collaterals, a 40-year-old woman and a 6-month-old baby girl, presented with similar symptoms since March 31 and March 30 respectively. The 40-year-old woman was admitted to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital on April 2 while the 6-month-old baby girl received a medical consultation from a private doctor on April 1 and no hospitalisation was required. They are currently in stable condition. Their blood samples tested negative for dengue fever at a private laboratory.

Other two travel collaterals remained asymptomatic. Investigations are on-going.

There have been 10 confirmed cases of dengue fever in 2014 as of today, and they were all imported cases. Last year 103 cases of imported dengue fever were reported to the CHP, with no local cases.

A spokesman for the CHP urged travellers to take the following preventive measures against dengue fever:

* Wear long-sleeved tops and trousers;
* Use insect repellent on exposed parts of the body; and
* Use mosquito screens or nets in rooms which are not air-conditioned.

Anyone feeling unwell after returning from a trip should seek medical advice as soon as possible and provide travel details to their doctor.

Three linked imported cases of dengue fever investigated

Hong Kong (HKSAR) - The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (April 18) investigating three linked imported cases of dengue fever and urged people to guard against the disease.

The first patient is a 64-year-old man with underlying illness. He developed fever, rash, nausea and myalgia since April 11. The second patient is the first patient's 64-year-old wife with underlying illness, who developed malaise, myalgia and rash since April 11.

Both were admitted to a private hospital on April 15 and were discharged on April 17.

They are in stable condition.

The third patient is their 31-year-old son with good past health. He developed similar symptoms since April 11 and was admitted to the same private hospital on April 15. He is in stable condition.

Their blood samples were all positive for dengue NS1 antigen upon laboratory testing by the CHP's Public Health Laboratory Services Branch.

The CHP investigation revealed that they had travelled to Jakarta, Indonesia between April 2 and 7. One other travel collateral, a 60-year-old man, had developed vomiting and rash while in Jakarta but he had no fever. He did not seek medical attention and had recovered.

His travelling period was from April 2 to 16. Investigations are on-going.

There have been 15 confirmed cases of dengue fever in 2014, and they were all imported cases. Last year 103 cases of imported dengue fever were reported to the CHP, with no local cases...

CHP investigates local confirmed case of dengue fever

Hong Kong (HKSAR) - The Controller of the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH), Dr Leung Ting-****, today (October 25) announced the investigation into a local confirmed case of dengue fever (DF), and hence again urged the public to take precautions against mosquito-transmitted diseases.

The male patient aged 63, with good past health, has presented with fever, headache and generalised weakness since October 9 and consulted a private doctor on October 13. He attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Prince of Wales Hospital on October 16 for persisted symptoms and was then admitted for management.

His clinical diagnosis was acute DF infection and he is now afebrile in stable condition.

The patient's blood sample taken on October 17 sent to the Public Health Laboratory Services Branch of the CHP today was tested positive for dengue antigen. Based on this result and other earlier presumptive laboratory findings, together with the clinical course of illness, the diagnosis of recent dengue fever infection was confirmed today.

Initial enquiries revealed that the patient lives in Pok Hong Estate, Sha Tin.

He worked in a construction site in Sai Ying Pun where he recalled mosquito bite, and indoors in Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH) before onset. He had no recent travel history during incubation period. Earlier, he travelled to Puning and Chaozhou, Guangdong, on September 10 and returned to Hong Kong on September 11...

CHP investigates three linked imported cases of dengue fever


Hong Kong (HKSAR) - The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) is today (October 29) investigating three linked imported cases of dengue fever (DF), and hence again urged the public to take precautions against mosquito-transmitted diseases.

The three patients include a man aged 62, his daughter aged 32 and her husband aged 34. The male patient aged 62, with underlying illness, has presented with fever, myalgia and diarrhoea since October 18 and attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Ruttonjee Hospital (RH) on October 22 and 24. No hospitalisation was required and he has been in a stable condition all along.

Both the female patient and her husband have good past health.

The former has developed fever and chills while the latter has presented with fever, arthralgia and diarrhoea since October 20. They also consulted RH on October 22 and no admission was required. They have been in a stable condition.

The patients' blood samples all tested positive for antibodies against dengue virus and dengue NS1 antigen upon testing by the CHP's Public Health Laboratory Services Branch.

Initial enquiries revealed that the trio had travelled to Guangzhou, with the man aged 62 from October 13 to 16 while the couple on October 13, 14 and 19.

Their travel collaterals have so far remained asymptomatic.

Investigations by the CHP are proceeding.

As of yesterday (October 28), 91 DF cases (one local, 90 imported) were reported to the CHP this year. In 2013 and 2012, 103 and 53 cases were filed respectively and all were imported...

Update on number of cases of dengue fever


Hong Kong (HKSAR) - In view of the dengue fever (DF) activity in neighbouring areas remaining at a high level, the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (October 31) provided an update on the number of cases of DF in Hong Kong, and called on the public to take necessary preventive measures to guard against DF.

As of October 30, there had been 94 confirmed cases of DF in Hong Kong this year, including 93 imported cases and one local case. Seven new cases were reported from October 24 to 30 involving patients who had travelled to or stayed in Guangdong (five cases) and Malaysia (one case) during the incubation period, and a local case.

DF is a common mosquito-borne disease. From 2004 to 2013, a total of 505 cases of DF were recorded in Hong Kong with no death cases...

CHP investigates second local confirmed case of dengue fever


Hong Kong (HKSAR) - The Controller of the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH), Dr Leung Ting-****, today (November 3) announced the investigation into the second local confirmed case of dengue fever (DF), and hence again urged the public to take precautions against mosquito-transmitted diseases.

The male patient, aged 25 with good past health, has presented with fever, headache, myalgia and arthralgia since October 27 and consulted private doctors on October 27, 28 and November 1. He attended Hong Kong Baptist Hospital yesterday (November 2) and was admitted for further management. He is now afebrile and has been in stable condition all along.

The patient's serum sample was tested positive against IgM antibodies for dengue virus and dengue antigen upon testing by the CHP's Public Health Laboratory Services Branch today.

Initial enquiries revealed that the patient lives in Hang On Building, 43-59 Po Kong Village Road, Wong Tai Sin.

He worked in the construction site of MTR Sai Ying Pun Station where he recalled mosquito bites before onset. He had no recent travel history during incubation period.

"We are very concerned about the case and are working closely with the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) for all-out efforts to assess and prevent any spread of infection," Dr Leung remarked.

"Upon notification and laboratory confirmation, the CHP immediately commenced epidemiological investigation and promptly informed the FEHD for vector investigation and mosquito control, as well as the management office of Hang On Building, the Wong Tai Sin District Office under the Home Affairs Department, the MTR Corporation Limited, and the Immigration Department for their corresponding follow-up actions. The CHP's investigations and health education in the vicinity where the patient frequented are proceeding," Dr Leung said.

The patient's home contacts have remained asymptomatic so far and will be put under medical surveillance.

Officers of the CHP will conduct field investigation by surveys at the patient's residence and workplace for active case finding and arranging blood tests.

Persons who have been to Hang On Building or the construction site of MTR Sai Ying Pun Station with DF symptoms should call the CHP's public enquiry hotline (2125 1122) for laboratory investigation or referral to hospital as appropriate.

The hotline will operate from 9am to 6pm tomorrow (November 4) onwards.

Joint health talk with the FEHD will be held tomorrow (November 4) afternoon at Tsz Wan Shan (South) Estate Community Centre to deliver health advice to the public.

"We will send letters to doctors and private hospitals to alert them of the case. We have also enhanced the surveillance of suspected DF cases in collaboration with public hospitals under the Hospital Authority, private hospitals and private doctors since October 25. Early referral and prompt control are critical to prevent further local spread of DF," Dr Leung added.

Apart from this case, as of yesterday, 96 DF cases (one local, 95 imported) were reported to the CHP this year.

In 2013 and 2012, 103 and 53 cases were filed respectively and all were imported...

A third locally contracted case of dengue fever was confirmed last night, and it appears to have originated in the New Territories, unlike the first two cases.

A 36-year-old woman was confirmed with the mosquito-borne disease, the Centre for Health Protection said last night.

The patient developed a fever, headache and muscle pain on Sunday, and saw a doctor on Wednesday. She was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital that day and is now in stable condition with a low fever.

It is believed she was bitten by a mosquito near her home in Chung Mei Lo Uk village, Sheung Ko Tan Street, Tsing Yi, the centre said. She also recalled mosquito bites when she was in the Tsing Yi Northeast Park. The patient has not travelled outside Hong Kong recently, nor has she been in the vicinity of the construction site for the Sai Ying Pun MTR station...

The female patient, aged 36 with underlying illness, has presented with fever, headache and myalgia on November 2 and consulted a private doctor on November 5. She was then referred to the Accident and Emergency Department of Princess Margaret Hospital and was admitted for further management on the same day. She is now in stable condition with low grade fever.

The patient's blood sample was tested positive for dengue virus type 4 upon testing by the CHP's Public Health Laboratory Services Branch tonight.

Initial enquiries revealed that the patient lives in Chung Mei Lo Uk Village, Sheung Ko Tan Street, Tsing Yi, New Territories, where she recalled mosquito bites.

She also recalled mosquito bites in Tsing Yi Northeast Park (TYNEP), Tsing Yi. She claimed no recent travel history both outside Hong Kong and to the vicinity of the construction site of MTR Sai Ying Pun Station during incubation period.

"We are highly concerned about this additional case. Based on current epidemiological findings, we suspect that there might be possible local transmission of dengue virus in other areas.

The blood sample of the second local case was positive for dengue virus type 1, indicating more than one source of infection. We are working closely with the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) for all-out efforts to assess and prevent any spread of infection," Dr Leung remarked.

"Upon notification and laboratory confirmation, the CHP immediately commenced epidemiological investigation and promptly informed the FEHD for vector investigation and mosquito control. We have also informed the village office of Chung Mei Lo Uk Village, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, and the Kwai Tsing District Office under the Home Affairs Department for their corresponding follow-up actions.

The CHP's investigations and health education in the vicinity where the patient frequented are proceeding," Dr Leung said.

The patient's home contacts have remained asymptomatic so far and will be put under medical surveillance.

Update on number of cases of dengue fever

In view of the dengue fever (DF) activity in neighbouring areas remaining at a high level, the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (November 28) provided an update on the number of cases of DF in Hong Kong, and called on the public to take necessary preventive measures to guard against DF.

Two new cases were reported from November 14 to 27 and involve two patients who had travelled to or stayed in Malaysia and the Maldives respectively during the incubation period. As of November 27, there had been 104 confirmed cases of DF in Hong Kong this year, including 101 imported cases and three local cases.

DF is a common mosquito-borne disease. From 2004 to 2013, a total of 505 cases of DF were recorded in Hong Kong with no death cases.

"At present, no effective vaccine for DF is available. Therefore, the best preventive measures are to avoid mosquito bites and to eliminate pockets of stagnant water that serve as breeding sites for mosquitoes," a spokesman for the CHP said.

Travellers should take the following preventive measures against DF:

* Wear loose, light-coloured, long-sleeved tops and trousers;
* Use DEET-containing insect repellent on exposed parts of the body and clothing; and
* Use mosquito screens or nets in rooms that are not air-conditioned.

Anyone feeling unwell after returning from a trip should seek medical advice as soon as possible and provide travel details to their doctor.

The latest information on DF in other places can be found under "Travel Health News" on the Hong Kong Travel Health Service website at www.travelhealth.gov.hk/eindex.html.

Members of the public should avoid the accumulation of stagnant water by:

* Disposing of all used cans and containers in covered rubbish bins;
* Changing the water in vases with plants once a week in order to prevent accumulation of stagnant water in the saucers;
* Covering all containers, wells and water storage points;
* Ensuring air-conditioner drip trays are free of stagnant water;
* Keeping all drains clear; and
* Paving all uneven ground.
