Hong Kong: Two linked imported cases of dengue fever investigated (10/11/10)

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (October 11) investigating two related imported cases of dengue fever and urged people to guard against the disease.
The first patient was a 26-year-old man who developed fever, cough, vomiting, muscle pain and skin rash since September 23. He was admitted to Pok Oi Hospital on September 26. He recovered and was discharged on October 4.
The second patient was a 32-year-old man who was presented with fever, headache and muscle pain on September 23 and was admitted to a private hospital on September 24. He was transferred to Yan Chai Hospital for further management on September 29. He recovered uneventfully and was discharged the next day.
Blood samples from them were tested positive for dengue virus.
The CHP's investigation revealed that both patients had travelled to Cebu, the Philippines between September 16 and 19 together with eight other collaterals.
The CHP is contacting their travel collaterals and so far, the travel collaterals contacted are asymptomatic. The household contacts of the two patients are also asymptomatic. The CHP will continue to follow up on the cases.
A total of 65 cases of imported dengue fever and four local cases have been reported to the CHP so far this year.
There were 43 cases in 2009 and all of them were classified as imported.
A spokesman for the CHP urged travellers to take the following preventive measures against dengue fever:

- Wear long-sleeved tops and trousers;
- Use insect repellent on the exposed parts of the body, and
- Use mosquito screens or nets in rooms which are not air-conditioned.
