Houston Texans rookie Anthony Hill hospitalized with swine flu

HOUSTON ? The Houston Texans on Friday confirmed that rookie tight end Anthony Hill has swine flu.

Anthony Hill is a rookie out of North Carolina State.

Hill spent the last two nights in the hospital.

The Texans say Hill was first diagnosed with pneumonia, but that diagnosis was later changed to swine flu.

The Texans learned about his illness Thursday night.

Gary Kubiak said Friday that Hill is doing better. It's unclear when he will be released from the hospital.

Houston Texans officials say that no other players have been affected.

The Texans' Tony Wylie said the team is taking the normal precautions to prevent the spread of swine flu and other illnesses.

Hill was a fourth-round draft pick out of North Carolina State.

HOUSTON ? Houston Texans rookie tight end Anthony Hill was hospitalized this week with swine flu in what may be the first confirmed case in an NFL player this season.

Hill is the only player on the team believed to have swine flu and other players are being monitored, Texans vice president of communications Tony Wyllie said today.

Hill, a fourth-round pick from North Carolina State, spent two nights in the hospital. Coach Gary Kubiak told the Houston Chronicle, which first reported the ailment, that Hill could be released later Friday.

Houston (1-2) hosts Oakland (1-2) on Sunday.

The Texans are believed to be the first team to confirm that one of its players has swine flu, also called the H1N1 virus. The NFL did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment.

In late August, Miami Dolphins defensive backs Sean Smith and Jason Allen were scratched from an exhibition game with flu-like symptoms, but the team declined to say whether the players were tested for swine flu. Smith and Allen declined comment.

The new swine flu seems no more deadly than regular winter flu, which every year kills 36,000 Americans and hospitalizes 200,000. This H1N1 strain sickens younger people more frequently than the over-65 population who are seasonal flu's main victims.

Flu-like symptoms have hit a number of college programs this season, including Wisconsin and No. 1 Florida, which last month held a number of players out of practice. The Gators had a round of flu shots about a week after a school official predicted that as many as 40 percent of students could catch swine flu this season.

Wilson, 2 other Texans ill

HOUSTON ? Houston safety Eugene Wilson was inactive against the Oakland Raiders because of an illness, and two other Texans were available to play but were also ill on Sunday.

Houston had the NFL's first confirmed case of swine flu earlier this week in tight end Anthony Hill. The other players got sick on Saturday night and Sunday morning, but the team did not confirm any other cases of swine flu.

Running back Chris Brown was available but not feeling well and didn't play. Linebacker Xavier Adibi was also ill but played on special teams.

"Eugene got very sick last night, it continued through this morning, so there was no way he could play," coach Gary Kubiak said. "We're monitoring the situation. It's something that's hit us in the past four days and we just have to work through it."

Offense lineman Eric Winston said Wilson was so sick that he "could barely walk."

"Some guys can play through it," Winston said. "It all depends on how it affects you. You are always concerned about some outbreak of the flu. If we get it, we get it. We just have to get over it."

When asked if the illnesses were more cases of swine flu, Kubiak said: I don't want to speculate on any of that ... but it was kind of scary (Sunday) morning, to be honest with you."
